South African Uber users will have to choose a different ride option from next month as the company retires UberX, one of its most familiar services in the country.

The change will take effect Sept. 1, when UberX disappears from the platform and customers are moved to a new set of ride choices.

Uber first announced the change for Johannesburg in May before notifying customers that the service would be discontinued across South Africa.

For many passengers, UberX has been the default choice for everyday trips because it offered a balance between price and comfort.

The service typically used cars such as Toyota Corollas and carried up to four passengers.

Uber said the decision is part of an effort to make its ride options simpler and give customers choices based on price, space and the type of trip they want.

In a message to customers Monday, the company described UberX as its “trusty go-to” option and said it was making way for a more tailored lineup.

Uber replaces UberX with four ride options

From September, South African customers will be able to choose Uber Go, Uber Comfort, Uber Black or Uber Reserve.

Uber Go will target passengers looking for lower-cost rides, while Comfort will offer newer vehicles, more space and an option to request a quiet trip.

Uber Black will focus on premium vehicles and highly rated drivers. Reserve will allow customers to schedule rides up to 90 days in advance, with locked-in pricing and scheduled pickup features.

Competition is reshaping South Africa’s e-hailing market

The change comes as competition in South Africa’s e-hailing market grows. Uber, Bolt and smaller operators are competing for passengers who are increasingly focused on price, convenience and safety.

Uber has also faced criticism over some of its newer services. Its Uber Moto pilot in Johannesburg drew concerns from road-safety groups over motorcycle passenger safety, including helmet requirements and rider standards.

Uber adjusts its South Africa business

Uber entered South Africa in 2013 and expanded to Johannesburg in 2014. The company has since built a major ride-hailing business in the country, offering services ranging from lower-cost trips to premium transportation.

The end of UberX will give Uber a chance to push customers toward its newer ride categories as competition increases.

For passengers, the key question will be whether Uber Go can provide the price and availability that made UberX a popular choice for everyday travel.
