Transcorp Hilton Abuja adds padel courts as hotel expands leisure offering

Transcorp Hotels Plc, the hospitality subsidiary of Transnational Corporation Plc chaired by Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu, has launched new padel courts at Transcorp Hilton Abuja, adding the fast-growing racket sport to the hotel’s recreational offerings.

The new courts are part of the hotel’s efforts to broaden its appeal to guests, families, business travelers and Abuja’s social community by offering more options for recreation alongside accommodation, dining, wellness and other leisure facilities.

Speaking at the launch, Transcorp Hotels Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Uzoamaka Oshogwe said guests increasingly expect hotels to offer more than accommodation.

“People want more from hospitality today. They want places where they can work, unwind, stay active, and create meaningful memories all in one destination. That is what we are offering at Transcorp Hilton Abuja. Our new padel courts are another way we are bringing people together and creating experiences our guests will love,” Oshogwe said.

New courts add leisure capacity

The addition of the courts comes as Transcorp Hilton Abuja continues to expand its leisure and events offering. The hotel has tennis and squash courts, swimming pools and wellness facilities, alongside its rooms, restaurants and other guest services.

The hotel also operates the Transcorp Centre, a 5,000-seat events and conference facility designed to host corporate meetings, exhibitions, weddings, conferences and cultural events. Its soundproof partitioning system allows the space to be configured for different types and sizes of gatherings.

“Complementing these offerings is the Transcorp Centre, one of Africa’s largest purpose-built events and conference venues,” Oshogwe said. “Together, these investments strengthen the hotel’s position as Nigeria’s leading destination where business meets leisure.”

Hotel investment continues amid profit growth

The investment in the hotel’s facilities comes as Transcorp Hotels reports higher earnings in the first half of 2026. Profit after tax rose to N10.54 billion ($7.7 million) from N8.68 billion ($6.4 million) a year earlier, according to the company’s unaudited financial statements.

The increase in profit came despite a decline in revenue. Transcorp Hotels said tighter cost controls, improved operating efficiency and higher finance income helped offset weaker demand in parts of its international business.

Profit before tax rose 12 percent to N13.69 billion ($10.01 million) from N12.23 billion ($8.94 million), while earnings per share increased to N1.03 from N0.85 in the same period a year earlier.

The results come during Elumelu’s first six months as chairperson of Transcorp Hotels and point to a stronger earnings performance in the period. The company has continued to invest in its hotels and related facilities while seeking to manage costs and protect profitability.

Transcorp Hotels expands its asset base

Transcorp Hotels’ balance sheet also expanded during the period. Total assets stood at N197.48 billion ($144.5 million) as of June 30, up from N159.91 billion ($117 million) at the end of December 2025.

Trade and related-party receivables increased to N46.31 billion ($34 million), while cash and bank balances rose to N17.44 billion ($12.8 million). Property, plant and equipment increased to N125.9 billion as the company continued to invest in its hotel portfolio.

Shareholders’ equity rose to N95.23 billion ($70 million), compared with N93.06 billion ($68.1 million) at the end of 2025. That increase came even after the company paid N12.29 billion ($9 million) in dividends during the first half of the year.
