Hakeem Belo-Osagie: Nigerian tycoon who ranked among Africa’s richest with a $600 million fortune in 2014

Looking at the sheer scale of the commercial holdings and enterprise Nigerian businessman Hakeem Belo-Osagie has built, observers often ask why he is not a fixture on the annual release of the global Forbes billionaires ranking. Belo-Osagie commands a multi-trillion naira business presence that reaches across financial services, technology, energy, real estate, agriculture, solid minerals, and infrastructure throughout the Nigerian economy. His broad commercial footing reflects the standing of an investor whose net worth rose to $600 million in 2014 according to Forbes, positioning him as Africa’s 41st richest person at the time.

Hakeem Belo-Osagie: Elite education and early career

Born in Lagos in 1955 to a gynecologist and a nurse, Belo-Osagie grew up in a family with close ties to the country’s leadership; his father served as physician to the family of former military president Ibrahim Babangida. He completed his early schooling at King’s College in Lagos before earning his secondary school diploma at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales. He then assembled a rare academic pedigree: an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, a law degree from the University of Cambridge, a master’s degree in politics, philosophy, and economics from the University of Oxford, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He was also admitted to practice as a member of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Belo-Osagie returned home to Nigeria in 1980 after completing his business studies, stepping directly into the oil economy as a petroleum economist and commercial lawyer. He entered public service, working as Special Assistant to the Presidential Adviser on petroleum and energy before serving as Secretary to both the Oil Policy Review and LNG Committees. In 1983, he co-founded Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, establishing a full-service commercial law firm with presence across key commercial cities. He later joined the Petrochemicals Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, resigning his post in 1986 to establish CTIC, which grew into a prominent energy advisory practice.

Pioneering high-stakes African corporate leadership

His transition into banking reshaped his corporate profile. In 1998, Belo-Osagie acquired a controlling stake in the United Bank for Africa (UBA), taking the helm as chairman of the board. His tenure ended when the Central Bank removed him amid regulatory allegations of improper practices. UBA subsequently merged with Standard Trust Bank in a transaction led by Tony Elumelu. Belo-Osagie continued his private investments through the following decades. In June 1992, he established First Securities Discount House Limited, the country’s first discount house and the foundation for what is now FSDH Holdings.

Today, FSDH operates as a major non-operating financial holding company, employing more than 500 professionals across 27 cities in asset management, pensions, securities trading, and investment banking. Between 2007 and 2017, he served as board chairman of Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Ltd, which operated Nigeria’s mobile network under the Etisalat brand. Belo-Osagie held a significant beneficial interest in the business, structured as a joint venture with Mubadala Development Company and the Etisalat Group.

Inside Belo-Osagie’s venture investment strategy

To anchor his long-term holdings, Belo-Osagie and his wife, Myma Belo-Osagie—a Ghanaian corporate lawyer with more than four decades of legal experience—founded Metis Capital Partners in Lagos. The family office directs capital into technology and financial software companies, backing startups such as Andela, Pivo, Brixie, and Aku Fintech. Through Metis, the family controls Duval Properties Limited, which helped back the $120 million Jabi Lake shopping mall in Abuja. Metis also owns Africa Critical Elements and remains the largest single shareholder in FSDH Group.

Belo-Osagie splits his time between executive boardrooms and global academic halls. Alongside his role as chairman of Metis Capital Partners and FSDH Group, he is a senior lecturer of business administration at Harvard Business School. His advisory commitments include seats on Harvard University’s Global Advisory Council, the Yale University President’s Council on International Activities, the New York University President’s Global Council, the International Advisory Council of the Brookings Institution, and the Global Board of Advisors at the Council on Foreign Relations.
