National Bank of Commerce (NBC) is expanding access to Tanzania’s stock market by linking its NBC Kiganjani mobile banking platform with the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange’s (DSE) Hisa Kiganjani trading service.

The partnership will allow Tanzanians to buy and sell shares in companies listed on the DSE directly from their mobile phones. It removes the need for investors to visit bank branches or capital market institutions to access share-trading services.

The move gives NBC customers another way to manage their money while opening a digital route into Tanzania’s capital markets. The companies said the service is intended to make investing easier and encourage more people to participate in the stock market.

The integration was unveiled in Dar es Salaam at an event attended by senior officials from NBC, DSE and the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), including NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi and DSE Chief Executive Officer Peter Nalitolela.

NBC brings share trading to mobile banking

Sabi said customers can use NBC Kiganjani to buy and sell shares, access market information and monitor the value of their investments. He said the partnership gives customers more flexibility in managing their investments.

“We are delighted to announce the partnership between DSE Hisa Kiganjani and NBC Kiganjani,” Sabi said. “This collaboration gives our customers the opportunity to buy shares directly through their NBC accounts using NBC Kiganjani.”

Nalitolela said the service is also available to people who are not existing NBC customers. Users can download NBC Kiganjani, register with their National Identification Number (NIDA) and access DSE Hisa Kiganjani through the app.

DSE targets wider market participation

Nalitolela said the service could encourage Tanzanians to use their bank accounts for more than saving by giving them a way to invest in listed companies. The mobile platform also allows investors to access the stock market without relying on traditional channels.

Alfred Mkombo, CMSA director of research, policy and planning, said the integration could bring more people into Tanzania’s capital and securities markets. He urged NBC to support the service with investor education so users understand how the platform works and the risks involved in investing.

NBC builds its digital banking offering

NBC is one of Tanzania’s established commercial banks, providing retail and business banking services through branches and digital channels. Its NBC Kiganjani platform gives customers access to banking services through their mobile phones, with the DSE integration adding share trading to that offering.

The partnership gives Tanzanians a direct digital link between everyday banking and stock-market investment, potentially making it easier for first-time investors to access shares listed on the DSE.
