When Megan Kim de Vroeg joined South African pharmacy retail giant Dis-Chem in October 2022 as a social media marketing manager, the retailer faced a structural challenge familiar to large healthcare chains: patients and consumers were navigating fragmented services.

The company’s pharmacy dispensaries, primary clinic care, and specialist referral networks operated as distinct, siloed units. For customers moving across these touchpoints, the division meant having to explain their medical history and needs repeatedly to different staff members at every stage of care.

De Vroeg recognized that solving this problem required turning disconnected operations into a single narrative and unified customer experience. Her work dismantling those internal barriers culminated this August, when she became the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of the $1.5 billion retailer, a promotion reflecting her contribution to shaping the group’s healthcare ecosystem.

Rui Morais details Dis-Chem’s CMO appointment

Dis-Chem CEO Rui Morais spoke on the strategic thinking behind the appointment in a public statement shared on LinkedIn, pointing out that a brand is ultimately defined by what people say when company leadership is not in the room.

He explained that closing the operational gap across pharmacy, clinic care, and specialist referrals took significant effort to pull three distinct segments of the business into one connected journey and articulate that value clearly to customers, patients, and policyholders.

According to Morais, the company’s signature Health Hub model exists because of de Vroeg’s efforts. She was instrumental in building and communicating the connected journey, and every Health Hub story the company has shared over the past year traces directly back to her work.

Morais noted that his leadership standard focuses on building teams that understand and execute a shared vision without needing constant direction, whether anyone is watching or not, making her appointment an earned reflection of internal execution rather than a title change.

Megan de Vroeg takes charge of Dis-Chem marketing

As CMO, de Vroeg now oversees the integration of customers into the broader Dis-Chem ecosystem, aligning brand strategy, healthcare services, the Better Rewards loyalty program, and customer experience. Her remit centers on driving commercial alignment across marketing, customer value, and business growth to make quality healthcare accessible and affordable.

Prior to taking on the top marketing post, she served as marketing manager for Integrated Health, leading marketing strategies that supported the group’s transition from a pure retail pharmacy chain into an integrated healthcare provider.

Her path to the executive suite draws on nearly two decades of what she describes as an unconventional career across film and television, entrepreneurship, international development communications, and corporate marketing.

Over the past twenty years, de Vroeg has worked with global brands, governments, independent entrepreneurs, multilateral institutions, and healthcare organizations across Africa and overseas. Her background includes producing television, developing branded entertainment, supporting United Nations initiatives, and building customer-centric communication strategies.

In her professional bio, de Vroeg wrote that every meaningful brand begins with a story worth telling. For her, working within healthcare offers the chance to generate meaningful impact at scale, noting that marketing has the capacity not only to build corporate brands but also to guide people toward better health decisions, help them secure needed care, and unlock greater value from the health services available to them.

Dis-Chem expands health platform investments

Megan Kim de Vroeg’s promotion comes as Dis-Chem strengthens its financial performance, with revenue rising 9.3 percent to R42.8 billion ($2.64 billion) in the year ended Feb. 28, 2026, despite pressure on South African household budgets and a weak macroeconomic environment.

Underlying profit before tax rose 20.1 percent to R1.8 billion ($111 million), driven by operating leverage and stronger retail margins. Retail revenue increased 9 percent to R36.6 billion ($2.25 billion), supported by 5.3 percent comparable pharmacy sales growth and 31 new or acquired stores. Wholesale revenue climbed 13.1 percent to R34 billion ($2.1 billion), aided by stronger demand and The Local Choice network, which grew from 240 to 280 stores.

Total income, excluding the previous year’s property gain, climbed 9.6 percent to R13.2 billion ($813.2 million), with total income margin rising to 30.8 percent from 30.7 percent. Retail margins expanded to 31.1 percent from 30.3 percent, supported by transactional margin gains and targeted promotional campaigns powered by data analytics through X, Bigly Labs.

During the period, Dis-Chem invested R445 million ($27.4 million) into initiatives designed to push the business beyond traditional retail, deploying approximately R330 million ($20.3 million) of that capital directly into expanding X, Bigly Labs and Dis-Chem Life. With capital directed into integrated health infrastructure, de Vroeg now steps in to lead the brand narrative connecting those investments directly to the consumers who rely on them.
