Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo have built a corporate network spanning grocery retail, wholesale distribution, property and trading, with Devland Cash & Carry at its centre. The Gathoo brothers’ business story is therefore broader than Devland’s supermarket footprint, where the brothers’ 50/50 control is directly documented.

Around it sits Barakaat Property Investments, which gives the group a property-owning component. Other businesses, including Metcash Trading Africa, ANE Western Cape, Komati Cash & Carry, Saveland and a collection of older trading and property entities, form part of the brothers’ broader corporate history and network.

Their expansion has also been driven by acquisitions. In 2021, Devland acquired nine stores from Masscash, including Cambridge Food, Rhino Cash & Carry and Klerksdorp Cash & Carry outlets, as part of a strategy to expand its national grocery footprint.

Their expansion strategy has been particularly visible through acquisitions. Rather than relying exclusively on opening new stores, Devland has repeatedly used acquisitions to obtain established grocery outlets and expand its geographic reach. The 2021 Masscash transaction, for example, was explicitly described as an effort to expand Devland’s national footprint.

That strategy has transformed the brothers from operators of a cash-and-carry business into owners of a more diversified FMCG, wholesale, retail and property network.

Here are 10 businesses and vehicles chronicled by Shore Africa that form part of the documented Gathoo corporate network:

1. Devland Cash & Carry

The centrepiece of the Gathoo brothers’ business empire, Devland is a South African FMCG wholesaler and grocery retailer operating a hybrid wholesale-and-retail model. Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo jointly control the company on a 50/50 basis. The brothers have used Devland as their principal acquisition platform, buying stores previously owned by larger retail groups and expanding the company’s national footprint. Its 2021 Masscash transaction included nine stores, while a subsequent transaction involved additional Cambridge Food and Rhino stores.

2. Barakaat Property Investments

Barakaat Property Investments is the property-holding company within the Devland group. South Africa’s Competition Commission states that Barakaat is wholly owned and controlled by Devland Cash & Carry and owns various properties across South Africa. The Commission said these properties are primarily used internally for the group’s wholesale and retail grocery and general-merchandise operations through Devland, while the group also leases property to third parties. In November 2023, the Competition Commission unconditionally approved a proposed transaction under which Barakaat intended to acquire Hillfox Trade Centre, a retail property in Weltevreden Park Extension 44, together with the contracts and letting enterprise conducted from the property.

3. Metcash Trading Africa

Metcash Trading Africa is another long-standing company in the brothers’ corporate network. CIPC-derived records list Gathoo Brothers, Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo as directors. Its significance is also reflected in a 2026 Gauteng High Court case, where Metcash Trading Africa was listed alongside Devland, Barakaat and ANE Western Cape as a surety in proceedings involving Hollard, establishing a connection with the Gathoo Brothers.

4. ANE Western Cape

ANE Western Cape is another company linked to the Gathoo Brothers and the wider FMCG network. The company was listed alongside Devland, Metcash Trading Africa and Barakaat in the 2026 Hollard litigation, with Mahomed and Shiraz also named individually as sureties. The available evidence supports describing ANE Western Cape as part of the brothers’ corporate network, rather than claiming that they personally own 100% of it.

5. Komati Cash & Carry

Komati Cash & Carry provides another link to the Gathoo Brothers’ wholesale grocery activities. CIPC-derived records identify both Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo as directors of the company, which was incorporated in 2004 and remains recorded as in business. The company’s registered address in Lenasia is also shared with several other companies associated with the Gathoo network.

6. Saveland

Saveland is another Gathoo-linked company incorporated in 2012. Both brothers are listed as directors, while the company is registered at Klepkas and Piston Road in Devland, Johannesburg. Its related-company records connect it with businesses including Hyperland, Komatipoort International, Zambia Commodities Export, M and S Export, EMRS Property and ANE Western Cape, highlighting the breadth of the network surrounding the brothers.

7. Golden Crest Products

Golden Crest Products provides one of the older links in the Gathoo corporate structure. The CIPC-derived record identifies Mahomed and Shiraz as members of the close corporation. The company is registered at the same Lenasia address associated with several other Gathoo-linked entities, including Farmor Properties, Barakaat Property Investments and Gatbro International Export and Import.

8. Gatbro International Export and Import

Gatbro offers a glimpse into the brothers’ earlier trading activities. An entity bearing the name was established in 1998 as a close corporation, with Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo listed as members. A later private-company record under the same name lists both brothers as directors. The business name itself has an obvious association with the brothers, although I would not state publicly that “Gatbro” means “Gathoo Brothers” unless the brothers or a primary corporate source confirms it.

9. Farmor Properties

Farmor Properties represents another long-running property-related vehicle. The company was incorporated in 1994, and CIPC-derived records list Mahomed and Shiraz Gathoo as members. Its corporate records place it within the same wider network of companies connected to the brothers, including REP-Props 1059, Golden Crest Products, Barakaat Property Investments and Gatbro International Export and Import.

10. REP-Props 1059

REP-Props 1059 is another property-related company with a long Gathoo connection. The original close corporation was incorporated in 1994 and lists Shiraz and Mahomed Gathoo as members. A later private-company record bearing the same name lists both brothers as directors. The two records suggest a corporate restructuring or conversion over time, although the precise ownership transition would require the underlying CIPC documents to establish conclusively.
