TotalEnergies and Nigerian partner AMNI have approved the development of the Ima offshore gas field, clearing a project expected to deliver 350 million cubic feet of gas per day and support the expansion of Nigeria’s liquefied natural gas industry.

The partners took the final investment decision on Wednesday for the field, located across Oil Mining Leases 112 and 117 near Bonny Island.

Production is scheduled to start in 2028, with the project expected to reach plateau output equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil per day.

Ima to supply one-third of Train 7 gas needs

The Ima field will be connected by pipeline to Nigeria LNG, making the project directly relevant to the company’s planned Train 7 expansion.

TotalEnergies said gas from the development is expected to provide about one-third of the feedstock required for the new liquefaction train.

Nigeria LNG’s expansion is designed to increase the company’s liquefaction capacity to 30 million metric tons a year from its current 22 million tons.

Securing additional domestic gas supplies is therefore critical to supporting the higher production capacity once the expansion comes on stream.

For Nigeria, the project links new offshore gas production with an existing export-oriented LNG infrastructure, potentially strengthening the supply base behind one of the country’s key energy businesses.

TotalEnergies deepens integrated gas strategy

The final investment decision also advances TotalEnergies’ broader integrated gas strategy in Nigeria, with the French energy company describing Ima as a low-cost gas resource.

At 350 million cubic feet per day, the field will add a substantial source of gas to the domestic production system once operations begin.

The development also gives AMNI, the Nigerian partner, a role in supplying gas to the country’s LNG export chain.

The Ima project is expected to become an important feedstock source for Nigeria LNG as the company works to lift annual liquefaction capacity by 8 million metric tons through Train 7, increasing the scale of Nigeria’s participation in the global LNG market.
