Continental Hotels Nigeria is betting on the strength of Lagos and Abuja to build one of the country’s largest integrated hospitality platforms, with its two properties combining nearly 1,000 rooms and about 7,000 square meters of meeting, conference and events capacity.

The group operates Lagos Continental Hotel and Abuja Continental Hotel, positioning the properties around Nigeria’s two most important commercial and government gateways.

Under Group General Manager Karl Hala, the company is integrating the hotels’ commercial planning, revenue management, sales, talent development, technology, engineering and procurement.

The strategy comes as the group continues investing in facilities, service standards and staff development despite a difficult operating environment for Nigeria’s hospitality industry.

Two cities, one hospitality network

Lagos Continental is positioned around the country’s corporate, investment, creative and international travel activity, while Abuja Continental is targeting demand from government, diplomacy, development institutions, professional associations and national events.

That gives the group a broad MICE offering spanning executive meetings, diplomatic receptions, conferences, weddings, product launches and extended corporate stays.

Hala said the integration of the two properties is intended to create a stronger performance and investment platform while preserving their individual identities.

Christoph Schleissing leads Lagos Continental, while Aurelio Giraudo heads Abuja Continental.

The group is also using the combined network to move successful operating practices between the two hotels and expand its reach among corporate and institutional clients.

Abuja upgrade enters new phase

Abuja is receiving significant investment in meetings, dining, wellness and sports facilities as Continental Hotels seeks to turn the property into a destination for both hotel guests and local residents.

Tower 2’s meeting rooms have been completed with updated facilities, natural light and modern audiovisual equipment. The spaces connect with the newly completed Atrium Restaurant & Bar, creating a combined meetings and dining proposition.

The hotel’s premium squash courts are scheduled to reopen in October, targeting fitness enthusiasts, competitive players, corporate wellness groups and lifestyle customers.

In Lagos, the group is pursuing a different repositioning strategy, using the city’s commercial and cultural profile to develop experiences that encourage domestic and international guests to stay longer and return.

That includes an exclusive culinary residency featuring Nigerian-born Michelin-starred chef Adejoké “Joké” Bakare and her Chishuru team from London. Bakare is the first Black female Michelin-starred chef in the United Kingdom.

Investing in hospitality talent

Continental Hotels is also putting skills development at the center of its expansion through the Continental Hospitality Academy, led by Cluster Director of Human Resources & Training Adeniyi Agoro.

Training covers service standards, guest engagement, front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, culinary skills, operational standards, supervisory development and departmental coaching.

The group also runs a Leadership Development Programme with B4B Partners, supported by Talstack, while a partnership with GIZ provides structured industry exposure in Germany.

Building Nigeria’s tourism pipeline

The strategy reflects the company’s view that its workforce is a key competitive advantage, alongside its facilities, operating systems and technology.

The hotels have also received recognition at the Travellers Awards held during the Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos, including recognition among Nigeria’s leading hotels and the Top 100 Travel and Tourism Icons.

For World Tourism Day 2026, Continental Hotels said Nigeria needs to treat tourism as an economic system connecting aviation, accommodation, food, agriculture, transport, entertainment, retail, manufacturing, technology and skills.

The group’s broader ambition is therefore not simply to increase hotel occupancy, but to help create more demand for Nigeria as a destination for business, leisure, investment and international visitors.
