Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, plans to sign an agreement with Boeing on Wednesday for 10 freighter aircraft, according to a banner displayed at the venue of the signing ceremony, confirming an order that could strengthen the carrier’s position in the global air cargo market.

Boeing order takes shape

Two industry sources said earlier this month that the state-owned Ethiopian carrier was nearing an agreement to acquire as many as 10 long-haul Boeing freighters. The deal is expected to combine existing aircraft with Boeing’s next-generation freighter as the planemaker manages delays to its newest cargo model.

The order is likely to include two Boeing 777F aircraft, the sources said, providing Ethiopian Airlines with near-term capacity while it waits for the delayed 777-8F. The remaining aircraft are expected to come from Boeing’s new-generation freighter program, according to the sources familiar with the discussions.

Cargo growth drives expansion

Ethiopian Airlines is also helping fund a $12.5 billion airport project that officials describe as Africa’s largest. The first phase is scheduled to open in 2030, adding another major piece to the carrier’s broader expansion strategy and reinforcing Addis Ababa’s role as a regional aviation hub.

The airline operates across more than 160 domestic and international destinations and has expanded its European network in recent years. Its cargo business has also grown alongside passenger operations, giving the carrier a larger role in connecting African markets with international trade routes.

Revenue hits record

Ethiopian Airlines Group reported record revenue of $9.1 billion for the 2025-26 fiscal year, a 20% increase from the previous period. The carrier handled 20.7 million passengers during the 12 months, up 10%, while cargo volumes increased 16% to 897,000 metric tons.

The stronger operating figures came despite higher fuel costs and regional conflicts that pressured margins. The freighter order would give Ethiopian Airlines additional cargo capacity as it expands its international network and invests in infrastructure designed to support its long-term growth across passenger and freight markets.
