South Ocean adopts Cables 4 Africa name

South Ocean Holdings is moving into a new corporate chapter after shareholders overwhelmingly approved a name change to Cables 4 Africa Holdings, putting a stronger African identity behind a business generating about R2 billion($121.11 million) in annual turnover.

At the company’s general meeting on Monday, Oct. 5, 99.25% of shareholders present voted in favour of the resolution. The approval allows the South African cable manufacturer and distributor to proceed with the rebrand after the JSE approved the proposed name change on Sept. 1, subject to shareholder approval.

The new identity comes as South Ocean seeks to sharpen the way its business is positioned in the market. Established in 1989, the group manufactures low-voltage electrical cables and supplies the local cable industry through its wholesale and distribution operations, employing about 400 people across the business.

$121.11 million business gets new identity

South Ocean said the Cables 4 Africa name is intended to more directly reflect its core capabilities, African market focus and longer-term growth ambitions.

The company wants the new identity to create a more unified presence across its relevant businesses, strengthen customer recognition and establish a consistent platform for future commercial expansion. It also sees the name as a clearer link between its corporate identity and the products and markets it serves.

The rebrand does not mean the group is abandoning the experience built under the South Ocean name. Management said it intends to retain the technical capabilities, operating experience and industry relationships developed over decades.

From South Ocean to Cables 4 Africa

South Ocean first announced the proposed name change on Sept. 1, describing it as part of a broader strategic repositioning rather than simply a visual rebrand.

The company said the new identity is designed to provide greater strategic clarity and bring its corporate and operating identities into closer alignment. It also described the business as customer-centric and Africa-inspired, with the new name intended to support a more consistent market presence.

The change is significant for a group that has operated under the South Ocean identity since its establishment in 1989. Its business remains focused on low-voltage electrical cables, wholesale activities and distribution to the cable industry.

JSE approval clears final hurdle

South Ocean is listed on the JSE and has a market capitalization of about R207.87 million($12.59 million), compared with its roughly R2 billion($121.11 million) annual turnover.

With shareholders now approving the resolution, the company can move ahead with the formal change to Cables 4 Africa Holdings. However, the finalisation date for the name change has not yet been communicated.

For the business, the immediate change is its corporate identity. The broader objective is to use that identity to present a more unified African-facing business while building on the manufacturing expertise, customer relationships and industry presence accumulated under South Ocean.
