Hemingways Nairobi has become the first and only hotel in Kenya to join The Leading Hotels of the World, giving the luxury boutique property a new international platform as it seeks to attract more affluent travelers to Nairobi and strengthen its standing among independent luxury hotels.

The 45-suite property, located in the leafy Karen suburb, is now part of LHW’s collection of more than 450 independent luxury hotels across more than 80 countries. The affiliation places Hemingways Nairobi alongside properties known for distinctive design, personalized service and strong connections to their destinations.

Kenya gains global spotlight

The membership gives Hemingways Nairobi access to an international network of luxury travelers and specialist travel advisers while preserving its independent ownership and operating model. The hotel, known for its all-suite accommodation and personalized butler service, becomes LHW’s first member property in Kenya.

Dean Bannon, vice president of member success and development at LHW, said Hemingways Nairobi’s distinctive character and connection to Kenyan culture made it a strong addition to the collection. He said the hotel would also help LHW meet growing interest in destination-led travel across East Africa.

A bigger luxury platform

For Hemingways Nairobi, the affiliation strengthens its reach among affluent international travelers without changing the identity that has shaped the property’s reputation. The hotel sees the partnership as a way to showcase Kenyan hospitality, design and service to a broader global luxury audience while remaining independently operated.

“Joining The Leading Hotels of the World is an important milestone for Hemingways Nairobi and for Kenyan hospitality,” Ross Evans, CEO of Hemingways Group, said. He said the affiliation provides a stronger international platform while preserving the independent spirit, thoughtful service and Kenyan character associated with the Hemingways brand.

Nairobi hotel makes mark

Hemingways Nairobi opened in 2013 in Karen, a leafy residential suburb of the Kenyan capital. The 45-suite property serves as the flagship of the family-owned Hemingways Collection, which operates luxury hotels and safari camps across Kenya and Rwanda.

The group’s portfolio includes properties in Nairobi, Watamu and the Maasai Mara in Kenya, as well as Rwanda. Its operations combine luxury accommodation with Kenya’s safari and conservation tourism sectors, giving the brand a footprint across some of East Africa’s most prominent leisure destinations.

Independent hotels go global

The Leading Hotels of the World was established in 1928 by 38 independent hoteliers and has since grown into one of the largest collections of independent luxury hotels. Its portfolio includes hotels, resorts, villas, chalets, safari camps and other distinctive properties across major global destinations.

The collection emphasizes independent ownership, personalized hospitality and properties with strong local identities. Its portfolio ranges from historic European hotels and family-run countryside retreats to urban luxury hotels, private island resorts and African safari camps, positioning local character as a core part of its luxury proposition.

Hemingways builds its brand

British-Kenyan businessman Sir Richard Evans, known as Dicky Evans, founded the Hemingways group in Kenya in 1988 with Hemingways Watamu. He remains the group’s principal shareholder and chairman, while his son, Ross Evans, assumed executive responsibility as group CEO in 2021.

Hemingways Nairobi’s LHW membership marks another step in the family’s effort to build an internationally recognized luxury hospitality business from Kenya. It also gives the country a new presence within a global collection where destination, heritage and highly personalized service are central to the guest experience.
