Amsons Group, a Tanzanian conglomerate with interests spanning energy, cement and logistics, has agreed to acquire Oryx Energies’ downstream oil business in Tanzania in a deal valued at more than $230 million, strengthening its position in East Africa’s fuel distribution market.

Announced on October 16, 2026, the transaction will transfer Oryx’s local retail service stations, storage terminals and distribution infrastructure to Amsons, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

The acquisition gives Amsons greater control over critical links in Tanzania’s petroleum supply chain, positioning the group to expand fuel storage and distribution capacity while strengthening the country’s role as a regional logistics hub.

Amsons turns Tanzania’s fuel storage network into a regional growth bet

The acquisition is expected to increase Amsons Group’s fuel storage capacity from 300,000 metric tonnes to 800,000 metric tonnes and expand its retail network to approximately 300 stations across several countries.

The deal also provides access to Oryx’s bulk storage facilities and interests in strategic fuel storage partnerships, including operations connected to Tanzania International Petroleum Reserves Ltd. (TIPER) in Dar es Salaam.

TIPER’s terminal serves domestic fuel demand, exports and seaborne re-exports, connecting imported petroleum products with distribution networks supplying regional markets. The expanded infrastructure could strengthen Amsons’ ability to move fuel through transport corridors linking East African ports with landlocked markets in Central and Southern Africa.

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the acquisition would strengthen the company’s energy and logistics businesses while supporting Tanzania’s ambition to become a vital regional distribution centre.

Oryx reshapes its African portfolio as Amsons takes over Tanzania operations

Oryx Energies Chief Executive Officer Moussa Diao said the transaction represents an important step in the company’s strategy to concentrate capital and resources on developing energy infrastructure across Africa and expanding its trading activities.

Tanzania has been an important market in Oryx’s history, Diao said, expressing confidence that Amsons would build on the business’s existing operations and relationships.

The sale forms part of Oryx Energies’ ongoing review of its downstream assets across Africa. The company will continue operating in Tanzania as usual until the transaction receives the required approvals and completion conditions are satisfied.

Amsons broadens regional industrial footprint

Founded in Tanzania in 2006, Amsons Group, the privately owned conglomerate, has diversified interests in fuel and lubricants, cement manufacturing, logistics, flour milling, liquefied petroleum gas and transportation.

Its operations span Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, supported by fuel depots, inland container facilities and a transport fleet.

The acquisition strengthens Amsons’ position beyond manufacturing and into the infrastructure underpinning regional fuel supply, adding a significant downstream distribution network to its expanding industrial portfolio.
