Shirley Machaba, the former chief executive officer and regional senior partner of PwC Southern Africa, has joined Sun International’s board as an independent non-executive director, bringing more than 35 years of experience in corporate governance, audit, risk management and financial leadership.

According to a Johannesburg Stock Exchange filing on Monday, October 19, 2026, the appointment takes effect immediately. Machaba has also joined the casino and hospitality group’s audit committee as an additional member.

Machaba brings extensive governance experience

Shirley Machaba made history in July 2019 as the first Black woman to lead PwC Southern Africa, taking charge of the professional services firm during a period of heightened scrutiny of the auditing profession in South Africa.

A South African chartered accountant and chartered director, she previously held several senior leadership positions at PwC, including Africa governance, risk and internal audit leader, partner-in-charge of its Waterfall office and chairperson of the firm’s South African board. She also participated in PwC Africa and global governance structures.

Before joining PwC in 2005, Machaba spent nearly a decade at the Auditor-General of South Africa, where she progressed through auditing and performance management roles. She subsequently served as chief audit executive at South Africa’s Department of Justice.

Her experience extends across public and private institutions, with a focus on accountability, organisational transformation, regulatory compliance and effective board oversight.

Machaba’s boardroom experience

Beyond her executive career, Shirley Machaba has served on several boards and advisory committees, including those associated with Tiger Brands, Stefanutti Stocks Holdings, the Institute of Directors South Africa, Pathfinder International and the International Women’s Forum South Africa.

She has also served on UNICEF’s Audit Advisory Committee and participated in Operation Vulindlela’s Phase 2 Technical and Governance Committee.

Her appointment comes as Sun International strengthens its board-level oversight of financial reporting, risk management and corporate governance.

Sun International reshuffles remuneration committee

Alongside Shirley Machaba’s appointment, Sun International announced changes to its remuneration committee. Mabaso Koyana will step down as committee chairperson on November 16, 2026, with Mothupi Palmstierna set to succeed her immediately.

The board said it looks forward to benefiting from the experience and guidance of its directors across the relevant committees. Sun International, one of South Africa’s prominent gaming and hospitality groups, operates casino, hotel and resort properties serving domestic and international customers.

Shirley Machaba’s appointment adds senior audit and governance expertise to the group’s board as listed companies face continued expectations for stronger oversight, accountability and transparent financial reporting.
