MTN Group has appointed senior Standard Bank executive and South African governance specialist Lwazi Bam as its new Group Chief Risk Officer, effective today, June 1, 2026, in a leadership move that strengthens the telecom giant’s risk oversight as it advances its long-term growth agenda.

The appointment brings one of South Africa’s most experienced boardroom figures into MTN’s executive leadership at a pivotal stage of its expansion strategy, as the group pushes forward with its Ambition 2030 plan focused on digital services, fintech growth, and financial inclusion across Africa and the Middle East.

Bam currently serves as remuneration committee chair and holds senior board positions within Standard Bank Group, where he also acts as Lead Independent Director, placing him at the intersection of two of Africa’s most influential listed corporates.

Strengthening risk oversight amid digital expansion

MTN said the appointment reflects its increasing focus on enterprise risk management, regulatory compliance, governance standards, and capital discipline as it evolves from a traditional telecom operator into a diversified digital ecosystem spanning more than 20 markets.

The group’s expansion into fintech, mobile money, enterprise solutions, and digital infrastructure has significantly increased its exposure to cybersecurity threats, regulatory complexity, and financial crime compliance requirements. The Chief Risk Officer role was elevated in importance following leadership changes in late 2025, when former MTN Group Chief Risk Officer Ferdi Moolman transitioned to lead MTN South Africa.

A governance heavyweight joins MTN leadership

MTN President and CEO Ralph Mupita described Bam’s appointment as a strategic reinforcement of the group’s executive team.

“Lwazi Bam joins MTN at an exciting time in our journey, as we embark on our Ambition 2030 strategy,” Mupita said.

“He brings strong leadership experience across complex, multi-market businesses, with deep expertise in risk, governance, and regulatory frameworks.”

Bam brings more than 30 years of experience spanning audit, corporate finance, governance, and executive leadership, including a 28-year career at Deloitte, where he ultimately served as CEO of Deloitte Africa. During his tenure, he oversaw operations across multiple jurisdictions and industries, advising major clients in banking, telecommunications, mining, and infrastructure.

Deep ties to Africa’s banking powerhouse

At Standard Bank, Bam has become a central figure in shaping executive remuneration policy, governance standards, and long-term value creation frameworks.

As chair of the remuneration committee, he has emphasized linking executive pay to sustainable performance, risk discipline, operational resilience, and shareholder returns.

Under governance structures involving Bam and other board members, Standard Bank Group delivered record headline earnings of R49.2 billion ($3 billion) in 2025, alongside a return on equity of 19.3% and continued balance sheet expansion to about R3.6 trillion in assets.

His board responsibilities have also extended across audit, risk, capital management, ethics, and directors’ affairs committees, reinforcing his influence within Africa’s largest lender by assets.

Cross-sector leadership at a critical moment

Bam’s appointment comes at a time when African telecom operators are increasingly converging with financial services through mobile money, digital banking, and embedded finance offerings.

This convergence has intensified the need for banking-grade governance structures, particularly around capital allocation, compliance monitoring, and operational risk management.

For MTN, which serves hundreds of millions of customers across multiple markets, the strengthening of its risk leadership is closely tied to the complexity of scaling digital platforms in heavily regulated environments.

Career shaped by governance and transformation

Beyond Deloitte and Standard Bank, Bam has held board roles across several listed and institutional organizations, contributing to audit, risk, and governance oversight frameworks.

A Chartered Accountant by training, he holds qualifications from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of South Africa, and completed executive education at Harvard Business School.

His broader leadership record includes roles in professional and social institutions such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA), and various corporate and nonprofit boards.

As MTN advances its Ambition 2030 strategy, Bam will be responsible for strengthening enterprise-wide risk governance across its expanding digital, fintech, and connectivity operations. The appointment signals MTN’s intent to align its rapid digital expansion with stronger institutional risk controls, as African telecom operators increasingly operate at the intersection of technology, finance, and regulation.
