Ugandan entrepreneur Ham Kiggundu builds diversified empire across real estate, logistics, education

Forty-two-year-old Ugandan businessman Ham Kiggundu has emerged as one of East Africa’s most prominent young entrepreneurs, building a fast-growing business empire anchored in real estate and expanding across multiple sectors.

Trained as a lawyer at Makerere University, Kiggundu began his entrepreneurial journey importing clothing and consumer goods from Asian and Middle Eastern trade hubs, including China, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Dubai, before distributing them across Uganda and regional markets such as Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Congo, and Sudan.

From trading to real estate dominance

As his capital base expanded, Kiggundu transitioned into real estate, focusing on land acquisition, development, and property trading. This pivot laid the foundation for what is now the Ham Group, a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning construction, manufacturing, hospitality, logistics, and education.

At the core of the group is Ham Enterprises U Limited, its flagship subsidiary, which has developed a significant property portfolio in Kampala. The portfolio includes shopping malls, office complexes, and hospitality assets.

Among its notable projects is Ham Palm Villas, a gated luxury residential development expected to accommodate about 500 homes. The company is also reconstructing Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium and developing a replica of the White House in Kampala, intended to serve as a corporate headquarters for parts of the group.

Expanding into entertainment and logistics

Beyond real estate, Kiggundu has ventured into entertainment through Ham Cinemax, which operates Uganda’s first 5D cinema experience. Located within a major shopping complex, the cinema features multiple screens and advanced high-definition sound systems, positioning it as a key player in the country’s evolving leisure sector.

His logistics arm, Ham International Express Logistics (HIEL), is headquartered in Euless, Texas, and provides freight services, customs clearance, and door-to-door delivery solutions, supported by computerized logistics management systems.

Agro-processing and industrial growth

Kiggundu has also invested in agro-industrialization through Ham Agro Processing Industries, which operates an integrated industrial park along the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway. The facility processes a range of agricultural products, including fruits, vegetables, and cereals, targeting both domestic consumption and export markets.

Education and retail footprint

In the education sector, Hana International School Uganda provides both Uganda’s national curriculum and the Cambridge international curriculum, reflecting the group’s expansion into social infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Ham Shopping Grounds remains one of the largest retail hubs in Kampala’s central business district, hosting more than 700 shops and serving as a major commercial destination for goods ranging from fashion to electronics.

Manufacturing ambitions

Through View Investments Ltd., Kiggundu has entered the fast-moving consumer goods sector, producing bottled water and non-alcoholic beverages, further diversifying the group’s revenue streams.

Building a regional business force

Kiggundu’s trajectory, from cross-border trader to conglomerate builder, highlights the growing influence of young African entrepreneurs in shaping regional economies. His expanding footprint across real estate, industry, and services positions the Ham Group as one of Uganda’s most dynamic privately held business empires.
