Kenya’s efforts to improve cancer treatment and reduce pressure on its healthcare system are set to receive a significant boost as RVL Healthcare moves forward with plans to establish a Ksh601.2 million ($4.7 million) specialist cancer hospital in Nairobi.

The private healthcare provider is developing the facility on a 9.3-acre site in the city’s upscale Nyari area along the Westlands-Red Hill Link Road. The hospital will offer a wide range of specialized services, including surgical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplantation, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and palliative care.

The investment comes at a time when demand for cancer treatment continues to rise across Kenya, placing increasing pressure on existing healthcare facilities and prompting both public and private sector players to expand capacity. Once completed, the hospital is expected to provide patients with access to advanced treatment options closer to home while helping address gaps in specialist cancer care.

The development will go beyond a traditional hospital. RVL Healthcare plans to create an integrated medical campus designed to support cancer treatment, prevention, research and professional training under one location. Alongside clinical facilities, the project will include support infrastructure intended to serve healthcare workers, researchers, students and patients.

Integrated treatment and research hub

The company said the hospital will function as a comprehensive center offering primary, secondary and tertiary cancer prevention services while also supporting medical research and education. The goal is to create a facility capable of treating patients, training healthcare professionals and contributing to advances in cancer care.

That educational component forms a central part of the project. The proposed campus is expected to provide physicians, surgeons, medical scientists and other healthcare practitioners with opportunities for clinical training, research and professional development. By bringing treatment and education together, RVL Healthcare aims to create an environment where patient care and medical learning can develop side by side.

Project documents describe the hospital as a “center of excellence” focused on improving outcomes for patients while supporting continuous learning among healthcare professionals. The design places emphasis on creating spaces that support recovery and well-being, while also providing areas for study, research and collaboration.

RVL Healthcare said the development will incorporate energy-efficient buildings and space-conscious designs as part of a broader “zero charge” campus concept. The site has also been planned with future growth in mind, allowing for expansion as demand for healthcare services, research activities and training programs increases.

Nairobi strengthens medical hub status

Beyond expanding access to treatment, the project could reinforce Nairobi’s position as a leading medical hub in East Africa. Specialized cancer facilities remain limited across much of the region, forcing many patients to travel long distances or seek care abroad. The new hospital is expected to ease that burden while supporting the growth of Kenya’s healthcare sector.

The project also reflects RVL Healthcare’s wider ambitions to expand access to oncology services across Eastern and Central Africa. The company has said it is working with industry partners to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies that support a comprehensive approach to cancer management.

The investment comes amid growing private-sector interest in Kenya’s healthcare industry. During the Kenya International Investment Conference 2026, healthcare emerged as one of the sectors attracting major commitments. Bounty Management Global announced plans to invest $60 million in Nairobi, while RVL Healthcare unveiled a separate $50 million investment plan. Balmer Healthcare also disclosed a $200 million investment project in Uasin Gishu.
