Western Cape biggest farms

South Africa’s Western Cape is home to some of the country’s most productive agricultural land, even though its farms are generally smaller than those found in the country’s interior regions.

Unlike the land-extensive ranches of the Northern Cape, the Western Cape’s agricultural economy is built around irrigation, export-oriented production, premium wine estates, intensive fruit cultivation, dairy operations, and conservation-led land use.

The province accounts for a meaningful share of South Africa’s commercial farming activity and plays an outsized role in agricultural exports, particularly apples, pears, grapes, stone fruit, wine, and dairy products.

Supported by access to water infrastructure, fertile valleys, and export routes through Cape Town, farms in the province generate high output and employment relative to land area.

The province accounts for about 17% of South Africa’s commercial farms, yet it dominates high-value agricultural exports, particularly fruit and wine.

Apples, pears, stone fruit, grapes, dairy, and game farming define its production economy. Farms are smaller on average, but far more productive per hectare due to irrigation systems, fertile valleys, and proximity to export infrastructure in Cape Town.

The Western Cape continues to redefine what agricultural scale means in South Africa. Rather than relying solely on vast land ownership, the province’s farming model increasingly rewards irrigation access, export capability, diversified income streams, and premium agricultural positioning.

Across fruit, wine, livestock, tourism, and conservation, the region demonstrates that the biggest farms are not always those with the largest footprints, but often those generating the greatest economic impact.

Shore Africa blends three dimensions: land size, production intensity, and economic footprint. It includes large-scale agribusiness groups, historic wine estates, mixed-use lifestyle farms, and expansive Karoo game reserves.

1. Caroluspoort Private Game Farm
Location: Prince Albert, Great Karoo
Size: 15,000 hectares (roughly 37,000 acres)

It is a low-density conservation and game farming operation with no internal fencing, allowing wildlife to move freely across vast semi-arid terrain. Unlike intensive agricultural farms, its value lies in scale, biodiversity, and eco-tourism potential. The property represents the Karoo model of “big farming,” land-extensive, wildlife-driven, and shaped by natural ecological systems rather than irrigation.
