The Fort is a private luxury estate located on the southeastern edge of Lamu Island, part of Kenya’s Lamu Archipelago along the northern coast. It sits directly on the white sand dunes of Shela Beach, overlooking the Indian Ocean and the long, quiet stretch of shoreline that defines this part of the coast.

Set within a wide expanse of dunes and coastal vegetation, the property offers a secluded environment shaped by its natural surroundings. It is designed for exclusive use, with full staffing and services provided for guests throughout their stay.

Heritage architecture on the dunes

Built in 2001, the estate reflects Omani-inspired architecture, a style that is closely tied to Lamu’s coastal heritage and historical trade links across the Indian Ocean.

The Fort is a multi-level structure built from local coral stone and enclosed by a tall sandstone perimeter wall rising to about 50 feet. Heavy wooden entrance doors, reinforced with iron studs, open into a central courtyard framed by large arches and open walkways.

The layout is arranged around this courtyard, with shared living areas, lounges, and dining spaces positioned to face the pool and surrounding gardens. Outdoor decks and shaded terraces extend the living areas, allowing guests to move easily between indoor and open-air spaces.

From the upper levels, the structure opens toward wide views of the dunes and ocean, reinforcing the estate’s connection to its coastal setting.

Private suites and coastal living

The property accommodates up to 18 guests across nine ensuite bedrooms. Seven of the suites face the central courtyard, while the remaining rooms are positioned to capture uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean and surrounding dunes.

In keeping with the architectural style, upper-level suites use canvas drapery and open design elements in place of glass windows. This allows natural airflow from the sea breeze while maintaining privacy and comfort. Several suites also feature private balconies that open toward the coastline.

Each room is designed to balance simplicity with comfort, offering private space within a larger shared estate.

Events, dining, and exclusive use

The Fort is frequently used for private gatherings, including weddings, family celebrations, and small corporate retreats. The estate can host up to 144 guests for events, with arrangements handled either independently or through local planning teams familiar with the property.

A dedicated tower room is used for meetings and can seat up to 22 people, making the estate suitable for small conferences or closed-door discussions.

Dining is centered around a fully equipped kitchen that operates under full-board or self-catering arrangements. Meals are prepared using local produce and fresh seafood, with influences drawn from Mediterranean, Asian, and coastal Kenyan cuisine. International ingredients, wines, and spirits can be arranged upon request.

Guests typically dine in one of two main dining areas, though meals can also be served on the beach, poolside, or on the rooftop terrace. Evening service often extends into outdoor candlelit dining under open skies.

Experience, views, and local access

From the upper terraces and dining spaces, guests can observe dhows moving across the Indian Ocean, a common sight along this historic trade route. The beach below remains largely undeveloped, with occasional local activity such as donkeys and camels passing along the shoreline.

The estate is located about a 10-minute walk from Shela Village, offering access to a small local community while maintaining a high level of privacy and separation.

A full staff manages daily operations, including housekeeping, service, and guest arrangements. Activities such as boat excursions, fishing trips, snorkeling, and visits to Lamu Town and nearby islands can also be organized on request.

The Fort combines a private coastal location with a structured hospitality setup, offering guests a contained environment within one of Kenya’s most established heritage destinations.
