Trustco flags Meya Mining production delays

Trustco Group Holdings, an investment firm majority-owned by Namibian businessman Quinton van Rooyen and his family, has issued a cautionary announcement to shareholders, flagging delays in the development of Meya Mining Limited, a Sierra Leone-based diamond project in which it holds a minority stake and significant loan exposure.

The Namibia-based investment group disclosed on July 8, 2026, that Meya Mining has yet to commence commercial production and remains in a prolonged development phase, marking a setback to earlier expectations that the mine would transition to full-scale operations.

Production delays and operational status

According to information received from the mine’s operator and audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2025, Meya Mining has not generated any revenue and has been in “care and maintenance” mode since January 2025. This status reflects operational readiness but limited activity, driven by challenging conditions in the global diamond market.

The pause is expected to continue until at least the fourth quarter of 2026, with no confirmed timeline for the start of commercial production. This represents a material delay from earlier projections tied to a $25 million financing facility secured in February 2026 to accelerate development.

Financial pressure and going concern risks

Meya Mining’s audited financial statements highlight growing financial strain, including net current liabilities of $36.6 million and a material uncertainty related to its ability to continue as a going concern.

The company remains dependent on banking facilities and ongoing shareholder support to sustain operations and fund future development. Despite its exposure, Trustco emphasized that it has not provided guarantees, sureties, or other credit support for Meya Mining’s obligations.

Trustco’s exposure under review

Trustco holds an indirect equity interest in Meya Mining alongside a loan receivable of approximately $46 million, positioning it as both an investor and a creditor in the project.

The group confirmed it is currently assessing the impact of the delays and financial position of Meya Mining on the carrying value of its investment and loan, as part of its ongoing audit processes. The potential financial effect could be material to Trustco’s overall financial statements.

Caution to investors

Given the uncertainty surrounding the project’s timeline and financial outlook, Trustco has advised shareholders to exercise caution when trading in its securities until further clarity is provided.

The company noted that its disclosure is limited to its own regulatory obligations and should not be interpreted as an endorsement or publication of Meya Mining’s financial statements. It also retains all rights under existing agreements related to the project.

Setback after earlier financing milestone

Trustco, a diversified financial services group headquartered in Windhoek, Namibia, with investments spanning insurance, banking and micro-finance, resources, and education. The van Rooyen family, which holds a 63.94% majority stake in the company, remains a driving force behind its strategic direction.

The update comes months after Meya Mining secured a $25 million financing facility from Ecobank Sierra Leone, supported by Ecobank Ghana, aimed at funding equipment, infrastructure, and preparations for commercial diamond production.

At the time, the funding was seen as a major step toward unlocking the mine’s long-term potential under its 25-year mining license in Sierra Leone’s Kono District, with expectations of job creation and increased local economic participation.

However, the latest disclosure underscores the challenges facing the project, highlighting the volatility of the diamond market and the complexities of transitioning from development to sustained commercial production.
