ICC approves Tanzania cricket grounds ahead of historic August opening

Tanzania’s cricket ambitions are set to receive a major boost after the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved three newly developed cricket grounds at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), paving the way for their official opening on Aug. 2.

The inauguration will be led by ICC Chairman Jay Shah, marking the first time an ICC chairman has officially opened a cricket facility in Tanzania.

The event is expected to highlight the country’s growing efforts to improve sports infrastructure and expand its presence in international cricket.

The approval comes as Tanzania continues to invest in facilities that can support player development, attract regional competitions and provide better opportunities for young cricketers.

The new grounds are expected to strengthen the country’s ability to host major cricket events.

The Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) said the ICC approval is an important milestone in its efforts to develop modern cricket facilities and build a stronger foundation for the sport across the country.

ICC inspection clears UDSM cricket facilities

TCA Chairman Dr. Balakrishna Sreekumar said the approval followed a successful inspection by ICC representative Chris Chiketa, who visited Tanzania to assess whether the grounds met international standards.

“We are pleased to announce that the ICC has approved our University of Dar es Salaam grounds,” Sreekumar said.

“This is a significant achievement for Tanzania cricket and reflects our continued commitment to developing quality infrastructure for the game.”

Sreekumar said he recently met Shah, who praised the association’s work in promoting cricket development in Tanzania and accepted the invitation to officially inaugurate the three grounds on Aug. 2.

New facilities to support Tanzania’s cricket growth

The opening ceremony is expected to bring together cricket officials, former players, administrators and stakeholders to celebrate what TCA described as one of the most important moments in the country’s cricket history.

Under its “Growth with a Purpose” vision, TCA said one of the three grounds will be dedicated to the Cricket Legends of Tanzania Reunion, recognising players who helped build the sport from the Tanganyika era to modern-day Tanzania.

Sreekumar said the tribute will honour the pioneers of Tanzanian cricket while inspiring a new generation of players.

He added that the ICC-approved facilities will improve training opportunities and help Tanzania host regional and international tournaments in the future.

The University of Dar es Salaam grounds represent a significant investment in Tanzania’s sports development and are expected to play a key role in expanding cricket participation across the country.
