Africa’s richest business leaders have become even wealthier over the past several months, adding a combined $6.2 billion to their fortunes as higher company valuations and solid business performance lifted the value of their holdings. The gains underscore how several of the continent’s largest publicly traded companies have continued to reward long-term investors despite a challenging global economic environment.

According to Forbes, the combined net worth of Africa’s 10 richest billionaires has climbed from $100.2 billion in mid-March to $106.4 billion, one of the biggest increases recorded in recent months. The rise has been supported by stronger share prices across key sectors, including manufacturing, luxury goods, banking, mining and consumer products, reflecting sustained investor confidence in many of Africa’s leading companies.

Africa’s top billionaires post massive gains

Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote remains firmly at the top of the ranking after adding $2.7 billion to his fortune. His net worth has risen from $28.5 billion in mid-March to $31 billion, widening the gap between himself and every other billionaire on the continent.

Much of that increase came from gains in Dangote Cement, the flagship listed company of the Dangote Group. The company’s stronger market valuation has lifted the value of Dangote’s stake, extending his lead as Africa’s richest person and reinforcing the scale of the industrial empire he has spent decades building.

While Dangote posted one of the largest dollar gains during the period, the biggest increase belonged to fellow Nigerian billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu. His fortune rose by $3 billion to $14.2 billion, driven by stronger valuations across the BUA Group’s cement, sugar and food manufacturing businesses. The increase moves him closer to the continent’s two wealthiest billionaires and reflects the continued expansion of one of Africa’s largest manufacturing groups.

South African luxury goods billionaire Johann Rupert also strengthened his position among Africa’s wealthiest individuals. His net worth increased by nearly $1 billion, rising from $16.1 billion to $17 billion over the same period. The gain reflects the continued resilience of the global luxury goods market, where Rupert has built one of Africa’s most valuable business interests through decades of disciplined investment.

Equity rallies propel African billionaire fortunes

The broader picture shows that wealth gains extended well beyond the top three names. Eight of Africa’s 10 richest billionaires increased their fortunes between mid-March and early July, with advances recorded across manufacturing, financial services, mining, consumer goods, and luxury brands. The performance illustrates how rising equity values across several industries contributed to higher personal fortunes.

Only two members of the top 10 moved in the opposite direction. South African mining entrepreneur Patrice Motsepe’s net worth declined by $700 million, while Capitec Bank founder Michiel Le Roux recorded a comparatively smaller decline of $100 million. Even so, the gains recorded by the other eight billionaires more than offset those losses, pushing the combined wealth of Africa’s richest individuals to $106.4 billion during the period under review.

The latest rankings also highlight where much of Africa’s private wealth continues to be concentrated. Manufacturing, financial services, mining, luxury goods, and consumer businesses remain the sectors producing many of the continent’s largest fortunes. As share prices fluctuated over the past several months, the order within the rankings shifted, but Dangote retained a clear lead at the top.
