Namibia’s Tumas Uranium project awards $23.8 million local contracts

Namibia’s Tumas Uranium Project has taken another step toward development after Deep Yellow awarded N$392.6 million ($23.8 million) in construction contracts to two locally owned companies. 

The contracts, granted to Namibia Construction and Nexus Building and Civils Contractors, come as the uranium project moves closer to a final investment decision (FID) expected later this year. Mobilisation at the site is scheduled to begin in August. 

The awards are expected to strengthen local participation in Namibia’s mining industry, creating about 500 jobs during the construction phase.

Each contractor will deploy an estimated 250 workers to support activities at the Tumas site. 

The scope of work covers civil and concrete infrastructure for the planned Tumas processing facilities.

Deep Yellow said the contracts will allow construction activities to begin across several areas at the same time, helping improve efficiency and reduce potential delays.

Local firms take key roles in uranium development 

Deep Yellow Namibia managing director Zebra Kasete described the contract awards as an important moment for local businesses and Namibia’s industrial capacity. 

“Today’s announcement is a celebration of Namibian capability. It demonstrates that local companies have the expertise and capacity to deliver projects of international significance,” Kasete said. 

He added that the project is expected to create more opportunities for local suppliers, service providers and workers as development continues.

The company said involving Namibian firms remains a key part of its approach as it advances the uranium project.

Tumas project advances toward final investment decision 

The construction contracts represent one of the major steps before Deep Yellow makes a final decision on whether to proceed with full-scale development of the Tumas project. 

Located in Namibia’s Erongo region, the project is considered one of the country’s significant undeveloped uranium assets and is expected to contribute to Namibia’s position as one of the world’s leading uranium-producing countries. 

Deep Yellow is an Australia-based uranium exploration and development company focused on advancing uranium projects in Namibia.

The company’s portfolio includes the Tumas Uranium Project, along with other uranium assets in the country. 

The company said the next phase of development will focus on preparing the project for construction while expanding opportunities for Namibian businesses and workers.

The Tumas project is expected to play a role in supporting long-term investment and employment in Namibia’s mining sector.
