Nedbank Group, one of South Africa’s five largest, top-tier financial services groups, has announced that its Chief Operating Officer, Mfundo Nkuhlu, will retire at the end of 2026, marking the close of a career spanning more than two decades at one of South Africa’s leading financial institutions.

Mfundo Nkuhlu, who also serves as an executive director of Nedbank Group Limited and Nedbank Limited, has opted for early retirement upon reaching the age of 60. His departure signals a significant leadership transition for the Sandton-based banking group as it reshapes its executive structure.

Nkuhlu’s impact on Nedbank

Mfundo Nkuhlu joined Nedbank in April 2004 as Managing Executive for Nedbank Africa and steadily rose through the ranks, holding senior leadership roles across corporate banking and group operations. His career trajectory within the bank includes key positions such as Managing Executive: Corporate Banking and Managing Executive: Nedbank Corporate, before he was appointed Chief Operating Officer in January 2015.

Over his 22-year tenure, Mfundo Nkuhlu played a central role in shaping Nedbank’s operational strategy and execution. As COO, he was instrumental in strengthening the group’s operational resilience, driving strategic initiatives, and guiding the bank through periods of structural transformation within South Africa’s evolving financial landscape.

His leadership extended beyond internal operations, influencing the bank’s long-term positioning in a competitive and increasingly digital banking environment.

Influence beyond the bank

Beyond Nedbank, Nkuhlu has been an influential figure in South Africa’s financial services sector. He served as Chairperson of the Financial Sector Transformation Council and was a member of the Board Executive Committee of the Banking Association of South Africa, contributing to policy direction and industry-wide transformation efforts.

Before joining Nedbank, he held senior roles at the South African Revenue Service and the Department of Trade and Industry, building a career that spans both public and private sector leadership.

What’s next for Nedbank?

Following Nkuhlu’s retirement on December 31, 2026, Nedbank will discontinue the role of Group Chief Operating Officer. The responsibilities tied to the position will be redistributed across the existing Group Executive Committee, reflecting a shift toward a more integrated leadership structure.

The group’s board expressed appreciation for Nkuhlu’s long-standing service, highlighting his role in advancing Nedbank’s strategy and operational strength over the years.

As Nedbank moves forward without a designated COO, the reallocation of responsibilities within its executive ranks is expected to play a critical role in maintaining operational efficiency while supporting the bank’s next phase of growth and transformation.
