Bénédicte Janine Kacou Diagou, one of Côte d’Ivoire’s most prominent businesswomen and a key figure in the second generation of the Diagou family business empire, has spent more than two decades helping transform her father Jean Kacou Diagou’s NSIA from an Ivorian insurance company into a diversified financial group spanning banking, insurance and investment services across Africa.

The daughter of NSIA founder Jean Kacou Diagou, she joined the group in 1999 after beginning her career outside the family business, including at Citibank in Côte d’Ivoire. She initially joined NSIA as director of audit and management control, later becoming financial director before taking on broader strategic responsibilities. (Atlas Magazine)

From finance executive to NSIA leadership

Her career inside NSIA coincided with one of the most important transformations in the group’s history. In 2006, NSIA acquired BIAO Côte d’Ivoire, marking its expansion from insurance into banking. Bénédicte Janine Kacou Diagou was involved in the group’s financial and strategic development as the group built a broader financial services platform.

She subsequently took senior positions within NSIA Participations and became increasingly involved in overseeing the group’s banking operations and subsidiaries across Africa. By 2017, she had risen to the position of Group CEO, placing her at the centre of the group’s regional expansion.

Under her leadership, NSIA continued expanding its banking and insurance businesses, including the 2017 acquisition of Diamond Bank SA, which strengthened its presence in several West African markets. Today, NSIA operates across approximately 12 African countries through about 30 companies, with interests spanning banking, insurance, asset management and technology.

Building the next generation of the Diagou empire

The evolution of NSIA has increasingly become a family succession story. In 2025, Manzima Holding, the Diagou family’s investment vehicle, acquired National Bank of Canada’s 22.6% stake in NSIA Participations. The transaction increased the family’s direct holding from nearly 47% to almost 70%, strengthening its control of the financial group.

The move gives Diagou’s generation greater influence over the future of the group her father founded in 1995 with approximately CFA300 million ($529,137).

NSIA’s banking business alone has since grown into a multibillion-dollar financial institution. NSIA Banque Côte d’Ivoire reported approximately CFA3.07 trillion ($5.29 billion) in assets at the end of 2025, alongside approximately CFA40.7 billion ($71.79 million) in net profit.

Beyond corporate leadership, Diagou has also developed the Bénédicte Janine Kacou Diagou Foundation, supporting entrepreneurship, education, arts and culture.

Her rise therefore represents more than a succession within one of Côte d’Ivoire’s biggest family businesses. It reflects the emergence of a second generation of African executives tasked with turning founder-built companies into enduring institutions. For Bénédicte Janine Kacou Diagou, the challenge is no longer simply to help grow her father’s empire. It is to help ensure that the NSIA group becomes a lasting African financial institution capable of expanding across generations.
