Aton Resources raises $2.8 million to advance Egypt’s Hamama gold project

Aton Resources has raised approximately $2.8 million to advance exploration and development at its Hamama gold project in Egypt, as the Canadian junior miner works toward a potential start of production in 2027.

The TSX Venture-listed company said on August 12 that it had completed a C$4 million financing. The proceeds will fund exploration and development activities at Hamama as Aton Resources advances the project toward potential production.

Aton targets 2027 Hamama production

Hamama forms part of the Abu Marawat exploration licence, a 57.7-square-kilometre concession held by Aton Resources in Egypt that also covers the Abu Marawat and Semna gold deposits. Aton Resources is targeting the start of mining at Hamama in 2027, although the project must still clear several technical, regulatory and financing milestones before production can begin.

Hamama contains 137,000 ounces of gold-equivalent indicated mineral resources and 341,000 ounces of inferred resources. Aton announced a pre-feasibility study for the project in December, while exploration and development activities continue.

The latest financing provides additional capital for the company to advance work at the deposit as it seeks to convert its resource base into a viable mining operation.

Egypt’s gold sector attracts fresh investment

Hamama’s development comes as Egypt seeks to expand its mining industry and attract greater international investment into its mineral resources.

The project would add to Egypt’s emerging gold production pipeline, where the Sukari mine remains the country’s dominant gold operation. Sukari, operated by AngloGold Ashanti, is the largest gold mine in Egypt and one of Africa’s biggest, with annual production capacity of approximately 500,000 ounces. Gold prices have also remained elevated following strong gains since 2025, potentially improving the economics of new projects and supporting greater investor interest in gold exploration.

Egyptian authorities have been pursuing reforms to increase the mining sector’s contribution to the economy, with the government targeting a rise in mining’s contribution to GDP to 6% from less than 1% currently.

Hamama faces key development milestones

Despite the latest funding, Aton Resources still has several steps to complete before Hamama can move into production. The company will need to advance resource conversion work, complete the necessary technical and economic studies and secure the financing required to develop the mine and associated infrastructure.

Further exploration could also help refine the project’s resource base and provide additional information needed for mine planning. The pace at which Aton completes these milestones will determine whether the company can meet its 2027 production target and establish Hamama as a new contributor to Egypt’s growing gold mining industry.
