Renergen Limited, a South African natural gas and renewable energy producer, through its subsidiary Tetra4 Proprietary Limited, has begun commissioning South Africa’s first liquid helium plant at its Virginia Gas Project in the Free State, moving the country closer to commercial helium production amid tight global supplies of the critical industrial gas.

The commissioning, announced by Renergen’s majority shareholder ASP Isotopes on Aug. 20, 2026, follows engineering optimization of the Phase 1 plant. Tetra4, Renergen’s subsidiary operating the project, expects to ship its first commercial liquid helium to customers in September and ramp production toward nameplate capacity during the second half of 2026.

Renergen begins phase 1 helium commissioning

The Virginia Gas Project is South Africa’s first onshore petroleum production right and is designed to produce both liquid helium and liquefied natural gas. The development marks a significant step for Renergen as it moves beyond liquefied natural gas production toward commercializing the project’s two primary product streams: liquid helium and LNG.

Tetra4 has produced LNG at the project since September 2022. The start-up of the liquid helium plant represents the remaining major step toward commercializing both product streams from the Virginia development. Phase 1 is expected to produce approximately 2,500 gigajoules per day of LNG and 70,000 cubic feet per day of liquid helium.

Commercial helium production is expected to begin during the third quarter of 2026, with Renergen targeting its first customer shipments in September.

Based on assumed LNG prices of $15 to $18 per gigajoule and an average liquid helium price of $600 per thousand cubic feet, ASP Isotopes estimates that Renergen could generate more than $27 million in annualized revenue following completion of Phase 1. The company expects to begin recognizing revenue from the Virginia Gas Project during the second half of 2026.

Global helium shortage boosts Renergen’s offtake prospects

Renergen’s move into helium production comes as the gas remains strategically important to several high-value industries, including semiconductors, health care, aerospace and quantum computing. Helium is used in applications that require extremely low temperatures, making reliable supplies important for technologies such as certain medical imaging systems, semiconductor manufacturing and scientific research.

ASP Isotopes said production from South Africa could become one of the first new sources of liquid helium to enter the market at a time when global supply remains tight. The development could therefore give customers another source of helium as industries and governments seek to diversify supply chains for critical materials.

Paul Mann, executive chairman and CEO of ASP Isotopes, described the commissioning as a major milestone following almost a decade of development work by Renergen and its employees. The commissioning also allows Renergen to establish South Africa as a new participant in the international helium supply chain.

Renergen is already in discussions with potential customers for LNG and liquid helium from Phase 1 and the planned Phase 2 expansion of the Virginia Gas Project. The company has signed take-or-pay agreements covering approximately 75% of Phase 1 LNG production and 15% of Phase 1 liquid helium production as it gears to complete contracting for the remaining Phase 1 volumes during the third quarter of 2026.

Phase 2 targets larger helium production

Following Phase 1 commissioning, Renergen plans to advance the much larger Phase 2 development during the second half of 2026. Phase 2 is expected to be approximately 13 times the size of Phase 1, with construction estimated to take about 44 months once development begins.

Renergen is pursuing up to $750 million in senior debt financing for the expansion. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation has indicated potential support of up to $500 million, while Standard Bank of South Africa has indicated potential financing of up to $250 million.

The proposed financing remains subject to negotiations and the execution of binding definitive agreements.

Renergen is also examining ways to accelerate revenue generation and cash flows from Phase 2 as it works toward the larger development.

South Africa enters global helium market

Renergen, a South African natural gas and renewable energy producer that holds the country’s first and only onshore petroleum production right. Acquired by ASP Isotopes in January 2026, it now operates the Virginia Gas Project in South Africa’s Free State province through Tetra4.

The project, which already produces LNG, is set to strengthen South Africa’s position in the global helium supply chain as the commissioning of the liquid helium plant moves Renergen closer to commercial helium sales. The immediate focus will now be on completing commissioning of Phase 1, delivering the first commercial helium shipments and ramping production toward nameplate capacity.

ASP Isotopes is expected to provide further details about its plans for Renergen and the Virginia Gas Project at its first Capital Markets Day in London on Sept. 8, 2026.
