Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo said he plans to invest about $200 million in Kenya through infrastructure projects, adding a new market to his growing business interests across Africa.

Chivayo disclosed the plan after meeting Kenyan President William Ruto during a dinner in Kenya. In a post on Instagram, he said the nearly three-hour meeting covered business, investment, infrastructure, and the economic opportunities available across Africa.

Chivayo targets $200 million Kenya investment

According to Chivayo, the proposed investment has been under discussion for some time and is now moving closer to implementation. He said the projects would bring private capital into Kenya while creating jobs and supporting the country’s infrastructure.

“For me personally, last night was particularly significant because my long-standing vision to invest a small US$200 million in Kenya through various infrastructure development projects is finally coming to fruition,” Chivayo said.

He did not provide details of the proposed projects, including their locations, investment structure, expected completion dates or how much of the $200 million would be allocated to each development. He also did not disclose the companies expected to execute the projects.

Kenya draws Zimbabwean tycoon’s investment interest

Wicknell Chivayo has also identified Kenya as an African market with potential for further investment, saying he plans to expand his business interests in the country as he seeks to strengthen his presence and pursue opportunities across the continent.

The proposed Kenyan investment adds to Chivayo’s business activities across Africa. He has said his net worth exceeds $100 million and has described himself as a centi-millionaire with ambitions of becoming a billionaire. Those claims have not been independently verified, and Forbes does not currently include him in its major wealth rankings.

Chivayo deepens African infrastructure investment push

His investment plans extend beyond Kenya. In June, Chivayo pledged $163 million toward a 300-megawatt solar project in Eswatini. The project, which will be developed through Intratrek Holdings, his Mauritius-registered holding company, is expected to operate as an independent power producer. It will be built on 120 hectares of land made available by King Mswati III and is intended to strengthen the country’s power supply and support industrial development.

The Eswatini commitment and the proposed Kenya investment point to Chivayo’s efforts to put capital into infrastructure and energy projects outside Zimbabwe. His latest announcement, however, remains at the stage of a stated investment plan, with further details needed on the projects, financing and execution before the scale of the Kenya commitment can be assessed.
