Donald Mzolisa Ncube (Don Ncube), a South African businessman and one of the biggest shareholders of Kinetiko Energy, has seen more than $5 million wiped off his stake in the Australian-based explorer focused on advanced shallow conventional onshore gas in South Africa after a sharp sell-off on the Australian Securities Exchange, Australia’s primary and largest stock exchange group (ASX).

Over the last 261 days, shares of Kinetiko Energy have declined by more than 47%, dragging the value of Don Ncube’s holdings from AUD17.72 million ($11.82 million) on January 1, 2026, to AUD9.37 million ($6.67 million) as of report writing. The steep drop comes amid investors’ sentiment, highlighting increasing volatility in the stock market, even among fundamentally strong companies.

Kinetiko Energy share price decline weighs on Ncube’s stake

Don Ncube, who was the first Black director of the Anglo American Corporation and currently a major shareholder of Kinetiko Energy, owns a 17.01% stake, equivalent to 253.12 million shares through Don and Jennifer Holdings Pty Ltd and Donald Mzolisa Jones Ncube Ltd. This holding has been directly impacted by the recent downturn, translating to a decline of AUD8.35 million ($5.15 million) in market value since the start of the year 2026.

The slump follows a strong rally earlier this year, when Don Ncube’s stake peaked at AUD20.25 million ($13.51 million) between January 8 and 15, 2026, as Kinetiko shares traded at AUD0.08.

Since then, the stock has surrendered nearly half of those gains. From its AUD0.07 starting price this year, Kinetiko has fallen 47.14% in Australian dollar terms and 43.56% in U.S. dollar terms to AUD0.037, cutting the company’s market capitalization to AUD52.82 million ($37.65 million).

Development momentum builds despite funding pressure

Kinetiko Energy made further progress towards commercial gas production in the June 2026 quarter, advancing its Brakfontein development in South Africa. The company implemented its Rolling Cluster Development Strategy, approved the Phase 1 Field Development Plan and began applications for key production permits.

However, Kinetiko ended the quarter with AUD479,000 ($341,308) in cash and reported estimated funding of just 0.52 quarters based on its June-quarter outgoings. Subsequent to quarter-end, the company secured commitments for an AUD5.4 million ($3.85 million) placement, with proceeds earmarked for Brakfontein development, further exploration drilling and permitting.

Long-term outlook remains intact

Founded in 2010, Kinetiko Energy is an Australian-listed energy company focused on the exploration and development of onshore natural gas resources in South Africa. Its portfolio centres on shallow conventional gas assets in Mpumalanga, including the Amersfoort Gas Project, with resources positioned near established energy infrastructure.

While the recent market correction has impacted Don Ncube’s holdings, the company’s strong fundamentals and established market position continue to support its long-term growth outlook.
