Nigerian banking titan Jim Ovia is set to pocket an interim cash dividend of $6.6 million from Zenith Bank Plc, five months after banking a $42 million payout. The windfall follows the lender’s move to raise its half-year shareholder distribution by 20 percent to historic highs.

The 74-year-old founder stepped down as board chairman in April, capping decades spent steering the flagship lender he established. He retains a commanding 14.13 percent equity stake, divided between 4,145,107,627 direct shares and 1,656,130,705 indirect shares, cementing his position as the commercial bank’s single largest individual investor.

Massive wealth on display

That combined holding of 5,801,238,332 shares carries a market value of N743 billion ($560.7 million), anchoring Ovia among Nigeria’s wealthiest figures. Under the approved payout schedule, his stake yields a gross dividend of N8.7 billion ($6.6 million), with an electronic net distribution of N7.83 billion ($5.91 million) clearing Oct. 26.

Zenith Bank’s board authorized the boosted distribution after pretax earnings for the six months through June 30 edged up 1.9 percent to N625.6 billion ($470 million). Profit held firm even as gross earnings retreated from N2.52 trillion ($1.89 billion) to N1.9 trillion ($1.43 billion).

Higher taxes pinch profits

A contraction in trading revenue dampened top-line income, yet bottom-line pressures mounted elsewhere on the ledger. Net profit dropped to N430.76 billion ($323.6 million) from N532.2 billion ($399.8 million) a year ago, dragged down by an income tax bill that more than doubled to N206.8 billion ($155.4 million).

Directors nonetheless greenlit a record midyear dividend of N1.50 per share, distributing N61.6 billion ($46.3 million) across total equity. That payout tops the N1.25 per share returned over the corresponding period in 2025, signaling boardroom confidence in the commercial bank’s underlying resilience despite tightening fiscal demands.

Balance sheet keeps expanding

Underneath fluctuating net earnings, the lender continued its steady march upward during the first half. Total balance-sheet assets rose 3.8 percent to N32.65 trillion ($24.53 billion) by June 30, up from N31.46 trillion ($23.63 billion) booked at the end of December, 2025.

Zenith Bank closed out the half-year window with total shareholders’ equity climbing to N4.89 trillion ($3.67 billion). A core pillar of that balance sheet remains retained earnings of N2.82 trillion ($2.12 billion), providing ample runway to absorb broader macroeconomic shocks.
