Shoprite Holdings, Africa’s largest food retailer, has appointed South African chartered accountant Tasneem Abdool-Samad as an independent non-executive director, strengthening the group’s board with extensive experience in audit, risk management and corporate governance.

The appointment, announced on November 6, 2026, will take effect on March 1, 2027. Tasneem Abdool-Samad will also join the retailer’s Audit and Risk Committee, where her financial reporting and governance expertise is expected to support oversight of the group’s financial and operational risks.

The appointment adds another experienced corporate director to the board of the Johannesburg-listed retailer, which operates across consumer-facing markets and relies on strong financial controls, risk oversight and governance structures.

Tasneem Abdool-Samad brings extensive audit and financial services experience

Tasneem Abdool-Samad is a Chartered Accountant of South Africa (CA(SA)), holding a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

She built much of her professional experience at Deloitte South Africa, where she spent several years as a partner. Her work across audit, risk, governance and financial services provided a foundation for her transition into non-executive leadership and corporate board roles.

Her background spans financial reporting oversight, strategic and investment decision-making, and governance across financial services, industrial and consumer-facing businesses.

Board roles span Absa, Bid Corporation and Reunert

Tasneem Abdool-Samad has developed substantial experience in South Africa’s listed-company sector, serving on the boards of Absa Group, Bid Corporation and Reunert.

At Absa Group, she has chaired the Group Audit and Compliance Committee, a role that places her at the centre of oversight of financial reporting, audit and compliance matters at one of South Africa’s major banking groups.

She has also served on and chaired several board committees covering audit, risk, remuneration, social and ethics, and investment. These responsibilities have broadened her exposure to governance and oversight across different industries.

Her experience in banking, industrial operations and consumer-facing businesses brings a cross-sector perspective to Shoprite’s board as the retailer continues to manage the financial, operational and regulatory demands of its business.

Appointment strengthens Shoprite’s governance oversight

Her appointment to Shoprite’s Audit and Risk Committee will add experience in financial controls, risk assessment and corporate accountability to the board’s oversight structure.

In its announcement, Shoprite said it had conducted the required fit-and-proper assessment under paragraph 6.73 of the JSE Listings Requirements and was satisfied with the outcome. The company also confirmed that there were no matters requiring disclosure arising from the integrity of information contained in Abdool-Samad’s director declaration.

The board welcomed her appointment and said it looked forward to her contribution to the group. Abdool-Samad’s appointment takes effect on March 1, 2027, adding to her existing board responsibilities and extending her influence in the governance of South African listed companies.
