Idris Elba and Sabrina Elba, a London based couple,  are advancing plans to transform Sherbro Island into a flagship West Africa sustainable tourism and economic development hub, a move that underscores rising investor interest in Africa’s blue economy, eco-tourism, and infrastructure growth.

Spanning over 600 square kilometres, Sherbro Island is a tropical paradise bordered by the vast Atlantic Ocean in Sierra Leone.

Despite its scale, the island’s local economy remains constrained by limited infrastructure, with fishermen unable to preserve their catch for export and farmers lacking access to modern agricultural tools, financing, and supply chains.

Untapped natural assets drive Africa tourism opportunity

Sherbro Island’s investment case lies in its untapped natural capital, miles of pristine beaches, lagoons, and abundant freshwater resources. These features position the island as a potential high-growth eco-tourism destination in Africa, aligning with global demand for sustainable travel and climate-resilient developments.

The Elbas are betting that blending environmental sustainability with inclusive economic growth can unlock long-term value, not only for Sierra Leone but as a replicable model for African development projects. Their vision reflects a broader shift among global investors toward impact investing and ESG-driven infrastructure across emerging markets.

Rebranding Africa through investment and storytelling

The couple bring a personal connection to the continent. Elba’s father is Sierra Leonean, while Sabrina Elba has Somali heritage. For the couple, the project is also about reshaping global perceptions of Africa.

“We wanted to see Africa represented the way that we knew it to be,” Sabrina Elba has said, highlighting the need to move beyond outdated narratives toward a modern African growth story driven by innovation, culture, and investment.

Elba Hope Foundation scales agricultural investment

Through the Elba Hope Foundation, the couple is already deploying agricultural development programs in Sierra Leone, targeting smallholder farmers.

The initiative focuses on sustainable farming, cocoa and cashew value chains, cooperative formation, and access to credit, key pillars for boosting rural productivity and export potential.

Hope Power Project anchors energy and connectivity push

A critical milestone came with the rollout of the Hope Power Project, a three-year initiative aimed at delivering island-wide electrification and wireless connectivity.

The effort aligns with Africa’s broader push to close its energy access gap and expand digital infrastructure, both seen as essential drivers of economic transformation.

Celebrity influence meets long-term investment strategy

Idris Elba, born Idrissa Akuna Elba, is a globally recognized actor, producer, and musician known for roles in The Wire and Luther, as well as blockbuster films including Thor and Pacific Rim. He is also a Golden Globe winner and a recipient of the Order of the British Empire.

Sabrina Elba is a model, entrepreneur, and United Nations IFAD Goodwill Ambassador, with a growing portfolio spanning philanthropy, business, and global development advocacy.

The couple is emerging as a high-profile force in Africa-focused impact investing, blending celebrity influence with long-term economic strategy.
