Cloud9 buys M-Tickets as East Africa’s fintech entertainment market grows

Cloud9, a fintech startup aimed at providing digital banking, payments and savings for young Africans, has acquired digital ticketing platform M-Tickets.

The move signals a further consolidation in a sector that has expanded quickly as Kenya’s growing middle class looks for easier ways to access live entertainment.

In cities such as Nairobi, more consumers now buy tickets on mobile phones, pay through digital wallets and expect instant confirmation.

That shift has brought financial technology and entertainment platforms into closer alignment across East Africa.

The deal also reflects how local startups are reshaping the structure of Africa’s digital economy.

Instead of operating in separate silos, companies are increasingly linking payments, commerce and lifestyle services into unified platforms.

Nairobi has emerged as a key testing ground for this model, supported by widespread mobile money use and steady demand for organized live events.

A shifting digital ticketing market

Industry analysts say the deal reflects a broader wave of consolidation in East Africa’s digital ticketing sector.

Competition is no longer limited to ticket sales, but also includes control of payment systems, user data and the full customer journey from purchase to entry.

The combined platform is expected to improve transaction efficiency and reduce fraud, which has remained a challenge for event organizers in parts of the region.

It also positions Cloud9 to manage higher transaction volumes as demand grows for concerts, festivals and corporate events in major cities.

Cloud9, M-Tickets and the push into lifestyle finance

Founded in 2025 by Tesh Mbaabu and Mesongo Sibuti, Cloud9 was built around financial services for younger users, including payments, savings, credit and investment tools.

The company has focused on mobile-first customers who expect quick access to financial services without the friction of traditional banking.

With the acquisition of M-Tickets, Cloud9 is extending its reach into digital ticketing, where payments and entertainment are increasingly connected.

The integration is expected to make it easier for users to discover events, purchase tickets and gain entry, while giving organizers more reliable payment systems and access to customer insights.

The deal signals wider consolidation in East Africa ticketing.

Fintech expansion and market questions

Cloud9’s move is part of a wider trend in which fintech firms are expanding beyond core banking services into entertainment, retail and other consumer services.

The approach reflects how digital finance is becoming embedded in everyday spending habits, especially among younger urban users.

If the integration delivers as planned, Cloud9 could process millions of transactions annually and strengthen its role in East Africa’s digital economy.

At the same time, the deal raises questions about competition and market concentration, as larger platforms take on a greater share of how entertainment services are distributed and accessed across the region.
