Air Tanzania is set to begin direct flights between the United Kingdom and Tanzania in July 2027, opening a faster route between Europe and two of East Africa’s leading tourism destinations.

The state-owned airline said it will operate nonstop flights from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport, a key gateway for travelers heading to Tanzania’s safari circuit and Mount Kilimanjaro.

The carrier also plans to introduce direct flights to Zanzibar as it looks to attract more British holidaymakers seeking beach and safari experiences.

The move reflects growing demand for travel to East Africa, where tourism has become an important source of jobs and foreign exchange earnings.

Tanzania has continued to draw visitors with destinations such as the Serengeti, Zanzibar and Africa’s tallest mountain, while airlines across the continent compete to expand long-haul routes.

Air Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Peter Ulanga said the airline plans to start with at least three flights a week from London Gatwick.

He said tourism would remain the main focus of the new service, alongside business travel and Tanzanians living in the UK visiting relatives back home.

Focus on reliability

Ulanga said reliability remains central to the airline’s growth plans as it works to build trust with international travelers.

According to the airline, more than 90 percent of Air Tanzania flights currently land within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival times.

The airline has also tightened its cancellation policy.

Ulanga said no Air Tanzania flight can be canceled without approval from the chief executive’s office, a measure aimed at improving passenger confidence and reducing disruptions.

Expanding international reach

Air Tanzania has traditionally been known for its domestic operations, serving 13 airports across the country, including Zanzibar.

In recent years, however, the airline has steadily expanded its international network as competition for African air travel grows.

The carrier now flies to destinations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, including Nigeria, South Africa, India, China and the United Arab Emirates.

Russia and additional European destinations are also being considered as part of its broader expansion plans.

Fleet growth plans

The airline is also investing in new aircraft to support its international ambitions.

Air Tanzania is expected to add eight aircraft over the next five years in one of the largest fleet expansion programs currently planned by an East African carrier.

The investment is expected to strengthen the airline’s long-haul operations while helping Tanzania position itself as a bigger player in African tourism and international aviation.
