Hilton is expanding deeper into South Africa’s tourism market with a new hotel project in KwaZulu-Natal, a province known for its wildlife, beaches and cultural attractions.

The global hospitality group announced the signing of Umfolozi River Hotel, KwaZulu-Natal, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, in partnership with Umfolozi Hotel and Spa.

The hotel will be built in Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal and is expected to open in 2028.

The agreement comes as major international hotel brands increase investment across Africa, betting on rising tourism demand and stronger interest in experience-led travel.

Hilton has continued to grow its presence in South Africa, targeting destinations linked to safari tourism, heritage sites and nature-based travel.

The signing was completed during Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban, one of the continent’s biggest tourism events.

Hilton said the project reflects its broader plan to expand lifestyle and leisure-focused properties across Africa.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, Hilton’s senior vice president for development in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said northern KwaZulu-Natal offers travelers a mix of culture, wildlife and outdoor experiences that continue to attract both local and international visitors.

Focus on tourism and cultural heritage

The hotel will sit close to Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s best-known wildlife parks, and the UNESCO-listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

The region is also widely recognized for its Zulu cultural heritage and traditional communities.

Hilton said the property is designed to give guests a more local experience while supporting tourism growth in the surrounding area.

The company has increasingly focused on hotels that reflect the culture and character of their locations rather than traditional large-scale city developments.

Hilton says the hotel will offer local experiences and boost tourism growth.

New hotel to include 102 rooms

The Umfolozi River Hotel will feature 102 rooms and suites, along with a spa, gym, swimming pool, meeting spaces and several dining outlets.

The property will also include facilities for conferences, weddings and social events.

Zakhele Mkhize, executive chairman of Umfolozi Hotel and Spa, said the development is expected to combine Hilton’s international hospitality standards with the identity and natural beauty of KwaZulu-Natal.

Umfolozi River Hotel will have 102 rooms, spa, gym, pool and dining spaces.

Hilton builds wider South African pipeline

The hotel will be managed by Valor Hospitality Partners, which said the project will include training and skills development opportunities for local communities through partnerships with tourism institutions.

Hilton currently has 12 hotels trading or under development in South Africa.

Its pipeline also includes The Sterling Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in Sibaya, and Hilton Garden Inn Polokwane, both scheduled to open in 2028.
