Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has opened Taj Bush Lodge, Greater Kruger South Africa, marking the luxury brand’s entry into one of Africa’s best-known safari destinations.

The opening forms part of IHCL’s broader expansion in South Africa, where the group plans to add two more Taj lodges in the Greater Kruger region in the coming months.

Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, said the lodge builds on the company’s long-standing approach of creating destination-led travel experiences.

“As Taj steps into Greater Kruger with the first of three luxury wilderness lodges, it brings with it a legacy of more than a century of hospitality rooted in the destination,” Chhatwal said. “The opening of Taj Bush Lodge strengthens the brand’s presence in South Africa, connecting the landscapes of Cape Town with the wildlife experiences of Kruger National Park.”

Set within the Greater Kruger region, the six-suite Taj Bush Lodge overlooks the Olifants River and is positioned inside the Big Five Balule Nature Reserve.

The property was designed to blend into the surrounding bushveld, with thatched roofs, wood finishes and earth-toned interiors reflecting the natural setting. Guests are offered private safari-style accommodations, guided game drives and outdoor dining experiences beneath the night sky.

The lodge also features wellness treatments under Taj’s J Wellness Circle brand, alongside dining focused on seasonal ingredients and local flavours.

Activities available to guests include bush breakfasts, traditional South African braais, safaris in Kruger National Park, quad biking and boat cruises. Visitors can also tour nearby attractions such as the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Jessica the hippo.

South Africa growth plans

Mark Wernich, Cluster General Manager Operations South Africa and General Manager of Taj Cape Town, said the Kruger expansion reflects growing demand for high-end safari travel tied to eco-tourism experiences.

“Our entry into Kruger National Park invites travellers to experience Taj’s hospitality alongside a well-established eco-tourism model,” Wernich said. “This will be complemented by two additional Taj lodges in the park set to open in the coming months.”
