South Africa’s grocery market is becoming increasingly competitive as retailers invest in premium shopping experiences to attract higher-income consumers.

Beyond shelves stocked with everyday essentials, flagship supermarkets are adding gourmet dining, specialty products and lifestyle services that encourage shoppers to spend more time in-store.

One of the best examples is Pick n Pay on Nicol in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The flagship outlet has become one of Africa’s most distinctive supermarkets, offering everything from freshly prepared meals and artisan bread to premium wines and healthcare services under one roof.

The store reflects a broader shift in food retail, where convenience is matched with quality and customer experience.

Instead of simply buying groceries, shoppers can enjoy restaurant-style meals, browse specialty food counters and complete banking or healthcare errands during the same visit.

Designed to serve customers looking for a premium shopping experience, the flagship store combines luxury food retail with everyday convenience, making it one of the most unique supermarket destinations on the continent.

Fresh food takes center stage

Pick n Pay on Nicol first opened in 2010 as one of the retailer’s environmentally conscious stores.

Large glass windows maximize natural light, while solar panels, rainwater harvesting and water-saving fixtures remain key parts of the building’s design.

A major refurbishment completed in 2019 reshaped the supermarket into Pick n Pay’s next-generation flagship.

The store expanded its fresh food offering with an artisan bakery, patisserie, larger butchery and seafood market featuring sustainably sourced fish, fresh mussels and oysters prepared for customers on request.

Dining and premium shopping under one roof

The prepared-food section includes a made-to-order burger grill, chicken rotisserie, fish-and-chip counter, Teppanyaki grill, deli and an upgraded sushi station where chefs prepare meals throughout the day.

A dedicated cheese room offers both South African and imported cheeses, including vegan and lactose-free selections.

The store also caters to shoppers looking for premium beverages. Its wine cellar carries more than 800 wines and includes an in-store wine adviser and tasting table.

Customers can also visit the Growler Bar for fresh craft beer, enjoy coffee from the organic coffee station or stop at the café and fresh juice bar.

Convenience beyond groceries

Pick n Pay has expanded the store’s services through partnerships with Clicks Pharmacy and MyLife Healthcare Centre, giving customers access to healthcare alongside their shopping.

Banking services, money transfers, utility bill payments and ticket bookings are also available, allowing shoppers to complete multiple errands in one visit.

Founded in 1967, Pick n Pay is one of South Africa’s largest supermarket groups, operating stores across several African markets.

The retailer has invested in modernizing its stores with a stronger focus on fresh food, digital services and premium retail concepts designed to meet changing consumer preferences.

The flagship store lives up to its premium positioning. Freshly prepared meals, artisan baked goods and seafood stand out for their quality, while knowledgeable and attentive staff provide a level of service comparable to South Africa’s leading premium food retailers.

The result is a supermarket that combines quality products, convenience and customer service in a way few grocery stores on the continent currently offer.
