Egyptian hospitality group Pickalbatros Hotels & Resorts has secured $200 million in financing from the World Bank to expand its hotel operations in Morocco as the country prepares for increased tourism demand ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The funding marks a major milestone in the company’s regional expansion strategy and strengthens its position across North Africa’s fast-growing hospitality sector.

World Bank funds expansion plan

The financing package, expected between August and September 2026, will support new hotel developments and upgrades across Morocco’s key tourism destinations. The investment aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy to increase accommodation capacity ahead of the global football tournament.

Morocco tourism demand drives growth

Morocco continues to attract rising international visitors, supported by infrastructure expansion and government-backed tourism initiatives. Hotel operators are increasingly positioning themselves to benefit from sustained demand growth.

Pickalbatros expands regional hotel portfolio

Founded in 1992 by Egyptian businessman Kamel Abu Ali, Pickalbatros operates one of the largest privately owned hotel portfolios in the region, with properties across Egypt and Morocco.

The group currently operates seven hotels in Morocco with around 1,500 rooms, reinforcing the country’s importance in its long-term expansion strategy. Its most recent addition was the Sangho Club resort in Marrakech.

Oman and Egypt growth pipeline

Beyond Morocco, the company is exploring opportunities in Oman, including Salalah and Muscat, while expanding its footprint in Egypt. Upcoming openings include a 280-room hotel in Cairo and a 620-room resort in Sharm El Sheikh. The company has allocated $200 million in hospitality investments for 2026, reflecting a significant increase in expansion spending.

Pickalbatros’ expansion reflects a broader trend of regional hospitality groups investing beyond domestic markets to capture rising tourism flows across the Middle East and North Africa.

With Morocco preparing for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the country is emerging as a major hospitality investment hub, while Egypt and Oman offer additional growth corridors for regional operators.
