Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most profitable airline, has launched a three-times-weekly passenger service to Lyon, expanding its network to 146 destinations worldwide and marking its third gateway in France. The first flight on the route has been scheduled, airline officials said.

Lyon added to French network

Speaking at a launch ceremony, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the new service reflects the carrier’s effort to widen international links and strengthen its position in Europe.

“Lyon’s role as an industrial and commercial center makes it a strong fit for our network,” Tasew said. “This service will support trade flows and improve movement between Africa and France.”

He added that France remains an important market in the airline’s long-term planning. Ethiopian already operates flights to Paris and Marseille, and Lyon becomes its third destination in the country.

Lyon, which has a sister-city relationship with Addis Ababa, is seen as a growing point of connection for business and cultural exchange between the two cities.

Trade links and network expansion

The airline said the route is aimed at serving both business and leisure travelers, with Lyon’s economy anchored in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and technology.

Ethiopian Airlines continues to position its hub at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport as a key transit point linking Africa with Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The carrier, Africa’s largest by network size, operates flights across more than 160 domestic and international destinations. It has steadily expanded its presence in Europe in recent years as part of a broader international growth plan.

Ethiopian Airlines performance and fleet expansion

Ethiopian Airlines reported $4.4 billion in revenue in the first half of its 2026 financial year, a 14% increase from the same period last year. The airline said passenger numbers reached 10.64 million, while cargo volume stood at 451,000 tonnes.

The company also recently took delivery of its first DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, aimed at improving access to remote routes within Ethiopia and supporting tourism development.

The latest results reflect steady demand across both passenger and cargo operations, reinforcing Addis Ababa’s role as a regional aviation hub.
