South African hospitality, gaming and entertainment group Sun International has appointed Vanessa Olver as its incoming chief financial officer and finance director, strengthening its executive leadership as the JSE-listed company prepares for a transition in its finance function.

Vanessa Olver will take up the role on January 1, 2027, succeeding long-serving CFO and finance director Norman Basthdaw, who is due to retire at the normal retirement age in April 2027.

Her appointment also comes as Olver prepares to leave the board of Investec Bank (Mauritius) Limited after notifying the bank that she intends to take up an executive position outside the group at the beginning of 2027.

Olver brings more than 25 years of finance experience

Vanessa Olver joins Sun International with more than 25 years of senior finance leadership experience across listed companies, banking, technology and financial services.

Her previous executive positions include finance director at Standard Bank Africa, chief financial officer and deputy chief executive officer at Business Connexion, and chief enablement officer for Rest of Africa at Absa Group.

Beyond traditional finance roles, Vanessa Olver has also led major operating divisions and complex technology and business transformation programmes, giving her experience spanning financial management, strategy, operations and corporate transformation.

She currently serves as an independent non-executive director on the boards of Investec Limited and Investec plc, where she chairs audit and risk and capital committees. She also serves on the board of Quantum Change.

Investec board departure planned for 2027

Olver has notified the board of Investec Bank (Mauritius) Limited of her intention to assume an executive role outside the group at the beginning of 2027. She currently serves as chair of the Audit Committee and as a member of several other board committees, while also serving as an invitee to the bank’s Risk Management Committee.

Olver will remain a director and continue carrying out her responsibilities on the board and its committees until her resignation ahead of taking up the Sun International position.

The effective date of her resignation will be confirmed in due course. Investec has already begun succession planning in preparation for her departure, with further announcements expected regarding the associated board and committee appointments. The bank said Olver had made a significant contribution to its strategic oversight and expressed its appreciation for her service.

Sun International prepares finance leadership transition

Olver’s appointment follows the planned departure of Basthdaw, who will relinquish his positions as CFO and finance director on January 1, 2027.

Sun International said Basthdaw had played a pivotal role in shaping the group’s strategic and financial trajectory during his tenure, extending his contribution beyond the finance function to portfolio optimisation, corporate transactions and strategic initiatives.

Although he will step down from his executive positions at the start of January, Basthdaw will remain available to Sun International until April 2027.

The company said he would work closely with Olver during the transition period while continuing to support the board and group as appropriate.

Finance leadership change comes as Sun International targets continued growth

The transition allows Sun International to combine institutional finance experience with Olver’s background in banking, technology and business transformation.

Her experience across major African financial institutions and listed companies could prove relevant as Sun International manages its portfolio of gaming, hospitality and entertainment businesses and continues to focus on long-term value creation.

With Vanessa Olver set to assume the CFO and finance director role at the start of 2027, the company is expected to focus on ensuring continuity in financial management while completing the transition from Basthdaw, who will remain available to the group for a further three months.
