Tanzania and Saudi Arabia are seeking to deepen economic cooperation as both countries look to expand trade, investment, tourism and energy partnerships across key sectors.

The push to strengthen ties was highlighted during a meeting between Tanzania’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Engineer Zena Ahmed Said, and Riyadh Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during the ambassador’s introductory visit to the Kingdom.

The discussions focused on widening business opportunities, attracting investment and strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

Tanzania is looking to increase its engagement with Saudi investors, while Saudi Arabia continues to build stronger commercial links with African markets.

The meeting also marked Ambassador Zena’s official introduction following her appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on March 5, 2026, according to Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

Joint business council to drive investment opportunities

A key part of the growing relationship is the Tanzania-Saudi Arabia Joint Business Council, which aims to encourage private-sector partnerships and support investment in areas such as agriculture, infrastructure, food security and other priority industries.

Trade between Tanzania and Saudi Arabia has exceeded $1.4 billion, making the Kingdom one of Tanzania’s major trading partners in the Middle East.

Tanzania imports refined petroleum products, fertilisers and plastics from Saudi Arabia, while exports of meat, fish and agricultural products continue to increase.

Both governments have also supported business forums in Dar es Salaam and Riyadh to connect investors and companies seeking opportunities in each market.

The efforts are expected to create more avenues for cooperation between businesses from the two countries.

Energy Cooperation takes centre stage

Energy remains one of the key areas where Tanzania and Saudi Arabia are exploring deeper cooperation.

Recent talks between Tanzania’s Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi and Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Yahya Ahmed Okeish, focused on strengthening energy security and developing Tanzania’s natural gas resources.

Tanzania holds an estimated 57.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, which the government sees as an important resource for industrial development, electricity generation and regional energy supply.

Tanzania is also seeking greater investment in its tourism sector, with Ambassador Zena highlighting opportunities for Saudi visitors and investors.

She invited Prince Faisal to visit Tanzania and experience attractions such as the Serengeti, Zanzibar and other destinations.

Tanzania’s growing investment appeal

Tanzania is one of East Africa’s largest economies, with key industries including agriculture, mining, tourism, energy and manufacturing.

The country has attracted international investors through its natural resources, strategic location and access to regional markets.

Ambassador Zena said Tanzania values its long-standing friendship with Saudi Arabia and remains committed to expanding cooperation that creates economic benefits for both nations.

The renewed partnership reflects efforts by both countries to strengthen trade links and develop new investment opportunities.
