Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s leading telecommunications and technology provider, has joined the FTSE Emerging Markets Index after its market value reached $3.9 billion, marking a step up in its standing among global investors.

The company was upgraded within the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) from the Small Cap to the Mid Cap segment as part of FTSE Russell’s semiannual review for September 2026 covering the Middle East and Africa region.

The move confirms that Telecom Egypt has met the eligibility requirements for the Mid Cap segment. Its market capitalization rose to approximately $3.9 billion as the stock reached new highs, clearing the minimum threshold for inclusion by a wide margin.

Stronger financial position supports upgrade

The transition reflects improvements in liquidity, cash generation and financial and operational performance. Telecom Egypt said the move is the result of its strategy to accelerate cash generation while maintaining disciplined financial management and directing capital toward high-return opportunities.

The upgrade also raises the profile of the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) among global capital markets. It highlights the exchange’s advisory and guidance services for listed companies and its efforts to improve their competitiveness and positioning in international indices.

For Telecom Egypt, joining the Mid Cap segment could increase its appeal to international investors and create opportunities for inflows from funds that track FTSE Russell indexes. It could also support trading volumes and strengthen the company’s visibility among global institutional investors.

Tamer El Mahdi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the upgrade reflects Telecom Egypt’s financial strength, operating performance and disciplined capital management. “This upgrade represents international recognition of what we have achieved in terms of sustainable growth, financial discipline, and our ability to create real, long-term value for our shareholders and investors.”

El Mahdi also credited the company’s executive management, employees, shareholders and partners for the achievement, saying Telecom Egypt would continue to focus on growth, competitiveness and long-term shareholder value.

Telecom Egypt remains one of three Egyptian companies

The FTSE Russell Emerging Markets Index currently includes only three Egyptian companies, including Telecom Egypt.

FTSE Russell is one of the world’s major index providers, tracking large- and mid-cap companies across global emerging markets. Its indexes serve as benchmarks for investment funds and institutions when allocating capital.

Inclusion is based on requirements including market capitalization, liquidity, trading volumes and free-float standards.

The FTSE Emerging Index measures the performance of large- and mid-cap companies across advanced and secondary emerging markets. It is part of the FTSE Russell Global Equity Index Series and serves as a benchmark for international index-tracking funds.

Telecom Egypt expands beyond fixed-line services

Telecom Egypt is the first total telecom operator in Egypt, providing fixed and mobile voice and data services to customers.

The company has served Egyptian customers for more than 170 years and maintains a leading position in the Egyptian telecommunications market. Its operations include advanced technology, telecommunications infrastructure and one of the country’s widest networks of submarine cables.

Telecom Egypt also reported stronger profitability and efficiency in the first half of 2026. Total revenue increased 17% year over year to EGP 59.2 billion ($1.1 billion), driven by a 26% increase in data revenue and a 32% increase in international incoming calls revenue.

Net profit rose 47% year over year to EGP 15.4 billion ($303 million), lifting the company’s net profit margin to 26%, compared with 21% in the first half of 2025. The stronger financial results, combined with the stock’s higher market value, position Telecom Egypt for greater visibility among international investors following its move into the FTSE Emerging Markets Index.
