From a family remittance business to a global financial-services group

Abdirashid Duale grew up working alongside his father, Mohamed Said Duale, who established Dahabshiil in Burao in 1970. The business initially imported goods including food, construction materials and clothing from the Gulf before developing into a remittance operation serving migrants sending money to relatives in East Africa.

The business underwent a major transformation after the outbreak of civil conflict in Somalia in the 1980s. As millions of Somalis were displaced, Dahabshiil developed a remittance network that enabled members of the diaspora to support relatives at home. By 1996, the company had expanded across Somalia, the Horn of Africa and East Africa and had begun transferring funds for international humanitarian organisations.

Dahabshiil subsequently established operations in the United Kingdom in 1998, expanding its network across Europe and the United States. The group later moved beyond money transfers into banking, mobile money and telecommunications, creating a broader financial-services platform serving communities in Africa and abroad.

Today, Dahabshiil says its money-transfer services are available across 150 countries, while its agent network exceeds 24,000 locations worldwide. Dahabshiil expanded into the sector through Somtel and later added Bluekom Fiber, which provides residential and business fibre-optic internet services. Somtel has subsequently introduced services including eSIM, 4G and 5G connectivity in the Somali-speaking region.
