Shah Palace Zanzibar is adding a new luxury property to East Africa’s high-end tourism market, with a 50-key boutique resort built around Swahili heritage, Islamic architecture and highly personalised hospitality on Zanzibar’s northeast coast.

The owner-operated, Zanzibari-led resort occupies a private stretch of coastline and positions itself as a destination rooted in local culture rather than a conventional international-style beach hotel. Its design combines influences from Zanzibar’s Stone Town, Morocco’s Fez and India’s Jaipur.

Zanzibar heritage shapes resort design

Shah Palace has been conceived as a living showcase of Islamic and Swahili design, with Moroccan lanterns, Persian rugs, Jaipur woodwork and traditional Zanzibari doors incorporated throughout the property.

The 50 individually designed suites and villas are spread across settings ranging from walled tropical gardens to elevated oceanfront spaces. The accommodation is designed around privacy, with contemporary amenities paired with handcrafted furnishings and regional design details.

The largest accommodation is the 2,926-square-foot Private Beach Pool Villa, which sits steps from the sea and includes a private plunge pool, shaded terrace and 24-hour personalised butler service.

The 2,174-square-foot Shah Palace Penthouse offers two ensuite bedrooms, a living room, dining area, plunge pool and Indian Ocean views. Other options include the 1,550-square-foot Private Garden Pool Suite, 1,270-square-foot Panoramic Ocean Pool Suite and 1,044-square-foot Panoramic Ocean Suite.

Local flavours anchor dining

Food is another part of the resort’s effort to connect luxury with Zanzibar’s culinary identity. The Shah Restaurant serves all-day dining, combining Swahili flavours with Indian, Arab, coastal African and Mediterranean influences. About 80% of its ingredients are sourced locally, while its menu ranges from local-fruit breakfasts to freshly grilled seafood and Swahili-Mediterranean dishes.

Guests can also use the Atoll Lounge & Bar for cocktails, afternoon tea and light meals, while the Atoll Beach & Pool Bar focuses on tropical drinks, fresh juices and casual food beside the pool.

Beyond the restaurants, the resort offers in-villa dining, private beach dinners and sandbank barbecues near Mnemba Atoll, with experiences tailored by personal butlers and the executive chef.

Wellness extends the luxury offering

The Shah Palace Spa combines treatments influenced by Indian Ayurveda, Chinese acupressure and Southeast Asian wellness traditions.

Its offering includes couples’ massages, reflexology, aromatherapy and facials, alongside separate male and female Finnish-wood sauna rooms.

A 24-hour fitness centre equipped with Italian Technogym equipment complements the spa, while daily yoga and meditation classes add a wider wellness programme.

For Zanzibar, the development reflects the island’s continued appeal as a luxury tourism destination while placing local architecture, food, craftsmanship and service at the centre of the guest experience.
