Abbey Bank Plc, formerly Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, Abbey Bank Plc, formerly Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, plans to begin commercial banking operations nationwide in the fourth quarter of 2026, expanding beyond housing finance into retail, business and corporate banking after securing approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate as a regional commercial bank.

A broader banking ambition

The lender is upgrading its digital infrastructure, strengthening internal capabilities and refreshing its brand identity ahead of the launch. The transition is designed to expand its customer base, improve access to financial services and position the institution to compete across more segments of Nigeria’s banking market.

Chief Executive Officer Mobolaji Adewumi said the bank was preparing for the change while focusing on a seamless transition and stronger operating capabilities. In a statement Tuesday, Abbey said the shift goes beyond a licensing change, reflecting its ambition to deepen customer relationships and create opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities.

Building on 34 years of experience

“2026 represents a defining moment in the history of Abbey,” Adewumi said, citing the regulatory approval as recognition of the work invested in the institution and the confidence of its regulators, shareholders, customers and employees.

The chief executive said Abbey would draw on more than three decades of experience in mortgage banking and real estate finance as it broadens its services. The bank aims to make banking more accessible and responsive to the needs of individuals, families and businesses, while creating new opportunities for customers.

Beyond mortgages and housing finance

Founded in 1992 by Rose Ada Okwechime, Abbey built its business as a primary mortgage institution, financing homeownership, estate development and property transactions.

Abbey Mortgage Bank changed its name to Abbey Bank Plc after receiving regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria, marking its move into commercial banking. Its commercial banking transition reflects an effort to adapt to changing customer demands and Nigeria’s evolving financial services market while preserving its expertise in housing finance.

Under the new strategy, the bank plans to serve retail customers, small and midsize businesses, corporate clients and public-sector institutions. It also intends to expand technology-driven banking services, giving it a broader platform to pursue customers beyond its traditional mortgage lending business.

Capital and growth in focus

Abbey’s expansion comes as Nigerian banks face higher minimum capital requirements introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria to strengthen the sector’s resilience. The lender has identified financial resilience, sustainable growth and a stronger capital base as priorities as it prepares to compete in the wider commercial banking market.

The transition gives Abbey an opportunity to diversify revenue beyond mortgages and reach a larger pool of customers. Its ability to execute the expansion will depend on its technology, capital strength and capacity to compete with established lenders while maintaining the housing-finance expertise developed over more than three decades.
