Val de Vie Estate ranks among top global wellness communities in 2026

South Africa’s high-end property market is drawing fresh international attention after Val de Vie Estate in the Western Cape was ranked among the world’s leading wellness communities.

The luxury estate in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley was named in the Global Wellness Institute’s 2026 Wellness Real Estate Atlas, a report widely followed in the global property and wellness sectors.

Val de Vie was the only African development placed in the Atlas’ top category of projects considered global examples for the industry.

The recognition comes as demand grows for residential developments centered on health, outdoor living and community-focused design.

Across global property markets, wealthy buyers are increasingly looking for homes that combine luxury with lifestyle, wellness and environmental sustainability.

Val de Vie Evergreen Lifestyle, the estate’s retirement village, was also included in the report’s second-tier category, adding to the estate’s growing international profile.

The Global Wellness Institute, a U.S.-based nonprofit focused on the wellness economy, assesses developments using measures tied to physical health, environmental planning, social well-being and long-term economic impact.

Luxury living with a wellness focus

Val de Vie Estate spans 917 hectares and was developed by founder Martin Venter on farmland acquired in 2003.

Over the years, the estate has grown into one of South Africa’s best-known lifestyle developments, with some homes listed for more than $4 million.

The Atlas described the estate as “one of the most comprehensive private wellness estates in Africa,” pointing to its broad mix of recreation, health and community facilities.

The development includes three lifestyle centers, a 1,000-square-meter wellness gym known as The Yard, polo fields, equestrian facilities, swimming pools, restaurants and more than 42 kilometers of walking and cycling trails.

The estate is also home to a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and a range of family-focused neighborhoods designed to support multigenerational living.

Economic and environmental impact

Beyond luxury property, the report highlighted Val de Vie’s environmental restoration work, including biodiversity conservation and smart water management systems developed on land that once included a sand quarry and wine farm.

Independent research cited in the report found that the development contributed $863 million to the Western Cape economy and helped create more than 51,000 sustainable jobs.

The Val de Vie Foundation has also invested more than $3 million in nearby communities over the past nine years through education, entrepreneurship and community support programs, extending the estate’s impact beyond its residential borders.
