Perseus Mining invests $174 million in Tanzania ahead of gold production

Perseus Mining is accelerating development of its Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania as construction work advances and capital spending deepens across the site.

The Australian gold producer says the project is already generating economic activity well before the start of commercial output.

The project, located in the Sengerema district of the Mwanza Region, is being developed through its subsidiary, Sotta Mining Corporation Limited. It is positioned as one of Tanzania’s key new gold developments and is now roughly halfway through construction.

Perseus Mining says about $250 million has already been invested in building the mine, with first production targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

The company expects the project to play a long-term role in gold output, government revenue, and local employment once operations begin.

Local spending and economic impact

Between July 2024 and March 2026, the project spent 371.6 billion shillings($141.54 million) on procurement from Tanzanian suppliers.

It also paid 60.7 billion shillings($23 million) in taxes and other statutory obligations, alongside 25.1 billion shillings($9.6 million) in wages and employee benefits.

A further 305 million shillings($116,101) has been directed toward community development programs.

Sotta Mining Corporation Country Manager Isaac Lupokela said the spending reflects an effort to ensure that economic benefits begin during construction, not only after production starts.

He said the focus has been on embedding local participation into the project’s development phase.

Jobs, training, and community infrastructure

Construction activity has created more than 3,600 jobs at the site, including 281 direct employees, most of them Tanzanian nationals recruited from surrounding communities.

The company has also provided 202 training opportunities over the past year to strengthen local skills in mining operations and related services.

To improve transparency in hiring, the company has established a Community Employment Committee to oversee recruitment processes and widen access for local residents.

Social investment and long-term outlook

Beyond employment, the project has supported a range of infrastructure developments, including completed water systems in Sotta East and Sotta West villages. Health, safety, and environmental awareness programs have also been expanded in nearby communities.

Additional projects include a replacement primary school, a second school under construction, and a new dispensary. Work is also ongoing on the Ngoma Bypass Road to improve safety and transport links in the area.

The Nyanzaga project is estimated to hold about four million ounces of gold and is expected to operate for at least 16 years once production begins.

Perseus Mining holds an 80% stake, while the Government of Tanzania owns the remaining 20% through Sotta Mining Corporation Limited.
