Air Tanzania launches direct Moscow flights to boost tourism and trade

Tanzania has opened a new air link with Russia after Air Tanzania launched direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Moscow, a move expected to support tourism, trade and business travel between the two countries.

The new route follows President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s recent visit to Russia, where she announced the service during the Tanzania-Russia Business Forum held alongside the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Officials say the flights will make travel easier for tourists, investors and exporters while helping strengthen commercial ties between Tanzania and Russia.

The route also supports Tanzania’s broader efforts to expand international air connections as the country looks to attract more visitors and increase foreign exchange earnings through tourism.

The inaugural return flight landed at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar on Sunday with more than 240 passengers aboard Air Tanzania’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, an early sign of strong interest in the service.

New route strengthens tourism

Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa said the passenger numbers show growing demand for direct travel between the two countries.

He said the government will continue investing in transport infrastructure to improve connectivity and support economic growth.

Air Tanzania Managing Director Peter Ulanga said Moscow is now the airline’s 35th destination.

He said the three-times-weekly service will improve international connectivity while creating new opportunities for tourism, business travel and cargo movement.

Business ties expected to grow

Economist and policy analyst Dr. Hildebrand Shayo said the new route is expected to strengthen Zanzibar’s position as an international tourism destination while making it easier for businesses to access the Russian market.

He said direct flights could also support exports of fresh flowers, seafood and horticultural products by reducing travel time and improving access for business delegations and investors.

Air Tanzania Company Limited, established in 1977, is Tanzania’s national carrier.

The airline operates domestic, regional and international routes with a fleet that includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and Airbus A220 jets as it expands its global network.

Economics lecturer Gilbert Mwabeza of Marian University and a doctoral candidate at the University of Dar es Salaam said the route reflects the benefits of Tanzania’s growing international partnerships.

He said continued investment in transport infrastructure and tourism will be important to attract more Russian visitors and support long-term economic growth.
