Alstom plans Tanzania transport investment after talks with Prime Minister Nchemba

Tanzania is seeking to deepen foreign investment in transport infrastructure as it expands projects designed to improve mobility, support trade and strengthen economic growth.

The latest push comes after Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba held talks with Philippe Deller, vice president of French rail and transport company Alstom, one of the world’s largest providers of public transport systems.

The meeting reflects the government’s efforts to attract global companies with the technology, experience and financing needed to support major infrastructure projects as cities continue to grow and demand for efficient public transport increases.

Officials say improving transport networks remains a key priority under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, which has introduced reforms aimed at making Tanzania a more attractive destination for investment in East Africa.

Focus on urban transport

Prime Minister Nchemba invited Alstom to invest in Tanzania, saying the government remains committed to creating a business environment that supports long-term investment.

He said ongoing reforms are intended to strengthen the country’s position as a regional center for trade, transport and investment.

Deller welcomed the opportunity to work with Tanzania and said Alstom is interested in supporting strategic transport projects that can improve urban mobility while contributing to the country’s broader infrastructure development plans.

Projects planned for major cities

Alstom said it is ready to explore investment in rapid transit systems and other modern transport infrastructure, beginning with Dar es Salaam, where growing traffic congestion has increased demand for more efficient public transport.

The company is also assessing opportunities in Mwanza, Mbeya and Arusha, where similar transport solutions could help improve connectivity, reduce travel times and support economic activity as the cities continue to expand.

Supporting long-term economic growth

The proposed investments are expected to improve the movement of people and goods, making it easier for businesses to operate while helping residents spend less time in traffic.

Better transport links could also encourage new investment and support Tanzania’s long-term economic development.

Alstom is a global leader in rail transport and mobility solutions, designing and supplying high-speed trains, metro systems, trams, signaling equipment and digital transport technologies.

The company operates in more than 60 countries and has played a role in major public transport projects across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The discussions are part of Tanzania’s wider effort to strengthen partnerships with international companies that can bring investment, technical expertise and advanced technology to support the country’s growing infrastructure needs.
