Wema Bank Plc, a Lagos-based lender, is moving deeper into financial management software through a partnership with Duplo, as Nigerian banks look beyond traditional lending and payment services to capture more value from business customers.

The partnership integrates Duplo’s financial management tools into ALAT Business, Wema’s digital platform for corporate clients. The move reflects a wider shift among banks as competition intensifies and lenders seek new ways to strengthen relationships with businesses beyond providing loans and transaction services.

Banking meets business software

Under the agreement, companies using ALAT Business will have access to tools for invoicing, supplier payments, expense approvals, collections and reconciliation within the bank’s digital ecosystem.

Existing ALAT Business customers will receive three months of free access to Duplo’s platform, allowing businesses to test the service before Wema introduces a long-term pricing structure.

The partnership gives Wema a stronger position in the growing market for embedded financial services, where banks are increasingly integrating technology into everyday business operations. By placing financial tools directly into company workflows, lenders can deepen customer relationships while creating additional sources of fee income.

Wema has expanded its digital banking operations in recent years through ALAT, which has become a key part of the bank’s strategy to serve individuals, small businesses and corporate clients.

Data emerges as a competitive advantage

The value of the partnership extends beyond software subscriptions. By supporting business processes such as payments, invoicing and reconciliation, Wema gains deeper insight into how companies manage their finances.

Access to real-time business activity can help banks improve credit decisions, develop more targeted treasury products and identify potential risks earlier. For lenders, financial data is becoming an important asset as competition increases across Nigeria’s banking and fintech sectors.

The partnership also places Wema in competition with fintech companies and enterprise software providers that already offer accounting, payment and business management tools to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Wema strengthens digital banking strategy

Wema Bank operates across retail, SME and corporate banking segments, providing lending, treasury services, trade finance and cash management solutions to customers nationwide. The lender has continued to invest in digital banking since launching ALAT in 2017, positioning the platform as a major channel for financial access and business services.

The lender reported stronger financial performance in the first quarter of 2026, supported by higher interest income and continued loan growth. Profit after tax increased to N63.13 billion ($45.8 million), compared with N35.85 billion ($26 million) a year earlier.

Revenue also improved during the period, with gross earnings rising to N204.82 billion ($148.5 million) from N139.38 billion ($101 million) in the first quarter of 2025.

Digital payments push expands

Duplo, founded in Lagos in 2021, provides business-to-business financial technology solutions that help companies automate payments, expense management, multi-currency transactions and invoice reconciliation.

For now, the ALAT-Duplo partnership remains a strategic investment rather than a guaranteed success. Customer adoption, pricing and long-term usage will determine whether the service becomes a meaningful revenue stream.
