Andrew Mukite Musangi, husband to late Kenyan billionaire Chris Kirubi’s eldest daughter Mary-ann Musangi, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) chair, is also the founder of Mukite Musangi & Company Advocates (MMC) with a wealth of nearly Ksh1.3 billion ($10 million).

For three decades, Andrew Musangi has been providing legal services through his law firm, MMC, a largely specialized firm dealing in corporate commercial practice and insurance litigation, as well as his involvement in the real estate sector, which has provided him with returns from various investments.

As the chair of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Andrew Musangi, who is married to Mary-Ann Musangi, the eldest daughter of late Kenyan billionaire Chris Kirubi, combines deep legal expertise with significant influence across Kenya’s financial and corporate sectors.

Andrew Musangi’s rise in law and corporate governance
Andrew Musangi is the founder and managing partner of Mukite Musangi & Company Advocates (MMC), a Nairobi-based law firm he established in 1998. Over the years, the firm has built a strong reputation in corporate and commercial law, banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, and insurance litigation. Through his legal practice and investments, Andrew Musangi has accumulated an estimated net worth of about Ksh1.3 billion ($10 million).

Andrew Musangi’s legal career began in the early 1990s at Sheth & Wathigo Advocates, where he trained and later worked as an associate. These early years shaped his expertise in commercial litigation, property law, and corporate advisory, skills that later defined his career as a trusted adviser to major Kenyan and multinational companies.

Beyond legal practice, Musangi has played a central role in high-value transactions, including advising on corporate restructurings, cross-border deals, and capital market activities. His work has spanned sectors such as financial services, infrastructure, insurance, and manufacturing.

Extensive boardroom influence

Musangi’s influence extends well beyond the courtroom. He has held leadership positions across several major institutions, including serving on the board of Centum Investment Plc, one of East Africa’s leading investment firms. He has also chaired GenAfrica Asset Managers and Smart Applications International, contributing to governance, strategy, and investment oversight.

In the public sector, Musangi previously served as chairman of Kenya’s Public Procurement Regulatory Board, where he oversaw compliance and transparency in government procurement processes. He has also been involved in professional bodies, including leadership roles within the Law Society of Kenya.

Appointment to the Central Bank of Kenya

In 2023, Kenyan President William Ruto nominated Musangi as chairman of the Central Bank of Kenya. Following parliamentary approval, he assumed the role, overseeing governance at the country’s apex bank while working alongside the executive management led by the governor.

His appointment came shortly after his wife, Mary-Ann Musangi, stepped down from the board of Sidian Bank, a move seen as aligning with governance expectations tied to his new public role.

Ties to one of Kenya’s prominent business families

Musangi’s marriage to Mary-Ann Musangi places him within the orbit of one of Kenya’s most influential business dynasties. Her father, Chris Kirubi, was one of East Africa’s most prominent industrialists, with interests spanning manufacturing, real estate, and media.

What defines Musangi’s leadership

Known for his governance-focused approach, Musangi has built a career centered on advising boards, managing regulatory risk, and facilitating complex transactions. Rather than leading a single operating company, his influence has been shaped through strategic oversight roles across multiple organizations.

As chairman of the Central Bank of Kenya, his focus remains on strengthening institutional governance and supporting financial stability. With increasing demands on regulatory oversight and financial innovation, his experience across law, finance, and corporate governance positions him as a key figure in shaping Kenya’s financial landscape.
